Hino Sets 2010 Emissions Surcharge

Cars Mania Blog
Auto Car | Hino Sets 2010 Emissions Surcharge  | Hino Trucks announced last week that it would add $6,700 next year to the price of a Hino truck with 2010-compliant emissions technology.

All diesel-powered truck makers are expected to add surcharges to vehicle purchase prices next year to cover the cost of adding new emission-controlling technologies to meet emission regulations that take effect Jan. 1, 2010.

Hino and most other diesel commercial trucks will rely on selective catalytic reduction to reduce nitrogen oxide emissions. SCR requires an additional canister in the exhaust stream and the periodic addition of a urea-based liquid the industry is calling diesel exhaust fluid to reduce emissions.

Navistar Inc. will use an expanded version of its current exhaust gas recirculation technology it calls Advanced EGR.

To date, some manufacturers have announced pricing. Navistar said it would add $6,000 to $8,000 to truck prices, depending on the engine. Daimler Trucks North America said it would add $6,700 to $9,000, again depending on the engine size.
