2009 Rolls-Royce Phantom Coupe

Auto Car | 2009 Rolls-Royce Phantom Coupe | Design wise the Phantom Coupe stays close to the sleek 101EX Concept that Rolls-Royce unveiled in autumn of 2007. Power comes from a 6.75 liter V12 engine that produces 453 horsepower and 531 lb-ft of torque. The 0-60 sprint comes up in 5.6 seconds while top speed is limited to 155 mph.

The third model from Rolls-Royce, which is said to be the most driver-orientated model in the Phantom line, will officially go into production in the summer of 2008. We can expect to see it on the state side in early 2009.

In 2006, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars unveiled 101EX, an experimental car hand-built to explore an exciting new design direction for a modern coupé. Wrapped in a sleek, rakish body, 101EX was an engineering-led study, showcasing the technical and architectural innovation inherent in the quintessential modern Rolls-Royce car. Both handsome and elegant, it encapsulated the essence of contemporary coupé style.

So positive was the worldwide reaction to 101EX that, in autumn 2007, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars announced that a series model would go into production in the summer of 2008. This coupé would complete the Phantom family, standing alongside the Phantom, Phantom Extended Wheelbase and Phantom Drophead Coupé.

Revealed at the Salon International de l’Automobile, Geneva in March 2008, the Phantom Coupé is the third new model from Rolls-Royce Motor Cars since BMW Group became custodian of the marque in 1998.

The Coupé is the most driver-orientated model in the Phantom line. A number of subtle but significant modifications have been made that change its character. It is noticeably more dynamic, whilst still offering incredible levels of comfort a balance not easily achieved.

The Coupé marries cutting-edge technology with a beautifully proportioned, muscular body that exudes power and style. Utterly contemporary in appearance, it nonetheless incorporates timeless Rolls-Royce design cues such as the long bonnet, large-diameter wheels, short front and long rear overhangs and the classic dynamic, rising profile.

Pleasing to the touch and to the eye, every material used in the Phantom Coupé has been carefully selected to combine form with function. The cabin’s sumptuous leather, rich wood grains and cool chrome accents create a driver environment unparalleled in luxury and comfort.

Designed to cover great distances with the minimum of fuss, the Coupé is a sublime choice for a transcontinental trip, its effortless power provided by the Phantom’s 6.75-litre V12, producing a phenomenal 453 bhp and 720 Nm of torque. Agile, fast, long-legged and virtually silent, the Phantom Coupé allows both driver and passengers to emerge unruffled, even after an all-day run.

The sleek lines of the Coupé suggest tremendous, effortless power. Designed to look like a moving form even at a standstill, the Coupé has the demeanour of a muscular animal, ready to be unleashed.

The front end, with its slim LED sidelights and larger, round driving lamps, has a gently raked, softer-edged appearance, sweeping back over the long bonnet to the strong line of the triangular A-frame. The front coach-doors are rear-hinged and were newly homologated for use on the Drophead Coupé. Enabling all passengers to enter and exit more gracefully, these doors also offer safety benefits: the rear hinging allows an uninterrupted A-pillar, which adds significantly to the car’s overall torsional rigidity. For ease of operation, the doors may be closed at the simple touch of a button, housed discreetly inside the front quarterlight.

In classic Rolls-Royce style, the Phantom Coupé has a dynamic, rising profile, its high waistline tapering back to a contemporary take on a boat-tail. Sleek body panels create an uninterrupted visual flow, complemented by accents of stainless steel and aluminium.

The picnic boot, as seen on the Drophead Coupé, is a wonderfully sociable feature. When lowered, it provides a seating platform for two, with hinges substantial enough to hold a weight of 150 kg / 330 lb. At the same time, it also offers easy access to the luggage compartment, which has a volume of 395 litres / 13.9 cu ft – enough for four sets of golf clubs.

The mirror-like finish of the paintwork perfectly sets off the stunning lines of the Coupé. Each body receives five individual coats of paint and lacquer, with hand-finishing between each layer. It is then polished for five hours to create a lustre that is unsurpassed in the automotive world. A new palette of nine standard paint colours has been selected for the Coupé, including Darkest Tungsten, Anthracite and New Sable. However, through the Bespoke programme, customers can choose from more than 44,000 different hues. Like the Drophead Coupé, the new model is available with a brushed steel bonnet and A-pillar surround. These parts are machine-brushed to create a uniform grain and then hand-polished to a unique and flawless finish.

Extraordinary attention to detail is the hallmark of a true Rolls-Royce and this is exemplified in the finer details of the Phantom Coupé. Visible tailpipes hint at its role as a driver’s car, as do the 21-inch wheels, which are available in three styles, including two forged alloy options. Indispensable to those who spend a lot of time in town is an optional camera, nestled below the front numberplate. When pulling out of a side road or parking, it transmits a split-screen view of the road ahead. At the rear, another camera is fitted beneath the chrome boot-lid handle, to aid reversing manoeuvres.

At the core of the Coupé is a sophisticated, all-aluminium spaceframe, first seen in the Phantom. It provides an exceptional base for the car, offering great strength, a very high degree of torsional rigidity and low weight, all of which benefit dynamics. Manufactured to within a tolerance of just 0.1 mm / 0.004 in, each spaceframe is constructed by hand and then checked by computer to ensure total accuracy. The body’s structure, comprised of box sections of aluminium, is painstakingly hand-welded by a team of experts. Every morning, each member of the team performs a 300 mm test weld to ascertain atmospheric effects on the metal with which they are working so that these can be taken into account. In all, more than 130 metres of weld are used to create the Coupé’s spaceframe.

The Phantom Coupé’s lightweight and rigid structure, the most torsionally stiff in the Phantom line, provides the foundation for its excellent dynamic abilities, but it also offers safety benefits. The box sections are exceptionally strong and offer greater dispersion of energy in the event of a collision. Frontal impacts are absorbed by crumple zones that direct the force into Y-shaped chassis members and the main understructure, the strongest part of the chassis. Side impact intrusion is minimised by the double-skinned floor construction, side sills and integral side impact bars in each door.

The inherent safety of the spaceframe is enhanced by other safety systems controlled by ISIS (Intelligent Safety and Information System). This takes readings from sensors located throughout the car and, in the event of an impact, makes up to 4000 calculations a second to establish its severity, deploying safety systems as necessary. These include intelligent braking and restraint systems, such as Dynamic Stability Control and Dynamic Traction Control, seatbelt pre-tensioners and any of six airbags.

With the exception of the picnic boot, steel bonnet and A-pillar surround, all the Coupé’s panels are created from aluminium, a material that delivers a substantial weight saving over steel. The large, single-piece front wings are made by a process called super plastic forming. The alloy is heated and then formed, without stress of the material, to the required shape and size in a process seen for the first time in the automotive industry.

At the heart of the Coupé is the same 6.75-litre V12 engine as used by the Phantom. Featuring advanced direct fuel injection with variable valve lift and timing, it offers the perfect combination of power and outstanding combustion efficiency. Designed to develop massive low-down torque, it delivers 75 per cent of its maximum power at just 1000 rpm, giving the smooth, unstressed performance associated with Rolls-Royce cars. The powertrain develops 453 bhp / 338 kW of power at 5350 rpm and 720 Nm / 531 lb ft of torque at 3500 rpm – ample for even the most enthusiastic of drivers. At 100 mph (where permissible), the Coupé’s power reserve dial shows that 90 per cent of the engine’s power remains untapped.

2010 Rolls-Royce Ghost

Auto Car | 2010 Rolls-Royce Ghost | Rolls-Royce sold just over 1,000 cars in 2007, the first four-figure annual tally in the firm's 104-year history. That surely delights parent BMW, which took charge of Rolls in 2003. But the Bavarian bosses see greater things for their celebrated English marque beyond its current trio of hulking $400K-plus Phantoms. Specifically, they want to boost Rolls sales closer to those of former stablemate Bentley, which now moves over 11,000 cars per year as part of the Volkswagen group. That suggests a somewhat smaller Rolls model that uses BMW hardware to sell just above the $200,000-$250,000 realm that has proven so lucrative for Bentley. It might be less sporty than a Bentley, but would tilt toward the same younger, very well-heeled buyers.

That, in a nutshell, is project RR4, a.k.a. "New Generation Saloon" (sedan to us Americans). Rolls-Royce confirms this car will debut sometime in 2010. The company recently announced it will go into production during 2009 and be will be called the Ghost. Rolls-Royce gave a sneak peek, in the form of the experimental 200EX at the March 2009 Geneva Auto Salon in Switzerland. Expect coupe and convertible versions early next decade. If all goes well, the Ghost will more than double yearly production at the modern BMW-built R-R factory in Goodwood, England to somewhere between 2,000 and 2,500 units. That's still far behind Bentley, but Rolls-Royce ownership isn't for everyone, old bean. Price? Well, if you simply must know, it's being rumored at $300,000-$400,000.

The 2010 Rolls-Royce Ghost was made official in late 2006, but with few specifics given. Since then, Rolls has announced that Goodwood will add a second assembly floor and a second shift to produce the Ghost. It has released two vague sketches of what the new car will look like, and several photos of the experimental 200EX the company says shows the direction the Ghost will follow. Fortunately, our spies have unearthed most of the basics, though some items remain a mystery.

Broadly speaking, the 2010 Rolls-Royce Ghost is based on the redesigned 2009 BMW 7-Series sedan that's due to start sale in the spring of 2009. The new 7's "F01" platform will be pulled like taffy to make the Ghost longer, wider, and taller than its German cousin. Yet, the Ghost will be almost a compact next to the Phantom--over a foot shorter by some accounts. It's also said to be nearly 500 pounds lighter despite a structure that uses less weight-saving aluminum. Still, the Ghost will be no bantam, likely to tip the scales just north of 5,000 pounds.

The Ghost will be motivated by a "unique to Rolls-Royce" turbocharged 6.6-liter V12 that packs 500 horsepower. The firm said early on that the powerplant will be "exclusive to Rolls-Royce," so some think that rules out a BMW engine. On the other hand, "exclusive" could just as easily mean a Rolls-only version of a new BMW V12 engine that is rumored to appear in the redesigned 7-Series.

Another complication is the Ghost's place in the world. In terms of power and performance, the 500-horse V12 puts it "upstairs" of the 453-horsepower 6.0-liter V12 Phantom, yet it leaves Ghost conspicuously "downstairs" of a prime competitor, the 553-horsepower 6.0-liter W12 Bentley Continental Flying Spur. In addition, the Phantom has been roundly criticized for its prodigious fuel thirst, and Bentley has announced plans to reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions for all its cars, which put pressure on Rolls to follow suit. According to the carmaker, this engine, combined with a ZF 8-speed automatic transmission, boasts better fuel and CO2 efficiency than the "already class-leading Phantom series of cars."

The 2010 Rolls-Royce Ghost will borrow many other components from the redesigned 7-Series, mainly those that owners won't see, as one R-R source told trade weekly Automotive News. The modified new-7 architecture should bring jumbo 4-wheel ABS disc brakes, all-independent suspension with air springs and computer-controlled shock absorbers, and speed-sensitive power steering. Another given is BMW's full range of electronic driving aids, such as an antiskid system and traction control, and radar-based cruise control. Wheels are said to be 19- and/or 20-inchers, with run-flat tires a possible no-cost option.

Other features are less certain, but the 2010 Rolls-Royce Ghost should be loaded with gadgets, partly for the presumed tech-savvy target audience and partly because BMW loves gizmos. Among the items being widely whispered are auto-close power doors and trunklid, a navigation system with a new type of glare-proof display screen, and a headliner with multiple fiber-optic points that glow to create a "starry night" effect, a bit of set design also found in the 2-door Phantom Coupé. (And please do say "koo-PAY.") A BMW iDrive-type control knob already appears in Phantoms, and so will probably appear in the Ghost as well.

As for styling, Chief Designer Ian Cameron says the 2010 Rolls-Royce Ghost will have a "more informal presence than Phantom models, with a greater emphasis on driving. In design terms this is expressed by [a] more organic form, yet with powerful, purposeful proportions." OK, but those company sketches suggest the Ghost may look rather like the 2005 Cadillac Sixteen concept, right down to the use of rear-hinged "coach" rear doors, as on the Phantom sedan. The Ghost should also lift the senior car's retractable "Flying Lady" grille ornament. The grille itself, however, will be smaller and far less upright than the Phantom's--much like the rest of the package. Interiors, unsurprisingly, will be lavishly appointed in top-grade materials, and the artisans at Goodwood will doubtless be happy to oblige sir or madam with all manner of special-order trims and colors.

One British report recently noted that the 2010 Rolls-Royce Ghost is "all about scale," a sales-boosting move down-market to where buyers are more plentiful. It's the same tactic Rolls employed to get back on its feet after World War II with relatively "cheap" models like the Silver Dawn. The Ghost is no less apropos for these difficult times, especially as even some Rolls customers might now feel just a bit conspicuous being seen in a Phantom. Ah, the problems of wealth.

Rolls also announced final specifications for the new car. The 6.6-liter turbocharged V-12 will pump out 563 hp and 575 lb-ft of torque and will mate to a ZF eight-speed automatic transmission. Zero to 60 mph is said to take 4.8 seconds, and the top speed will be governed at 155 mph. Likely to be shown in production trim at the Frankfurt auto show in September, the 2010 Ghost will slot below the current Phantom range and gives Rolls-Royce a more attainable model to compete against the Bentley Continental Flying Spur, as well as the upcoming 2010 Aston Martin Rapide. At 212.6 inches long—with a 129.7-inch wheelbase—76.7 inches wide, and 61 inches tall, the new Rolls is slightly longer and taller than the Bentley, but a smidge narrower. The Continental lineup also includes GT coupe and GTC convertible versions, and we expect two-door and droptop iterations of the Ghost to launch after the sedan.

Rolls-Royce CEO Tom Purves said the Ghost name is fitting for the new model because it evokes a sense of “adventure and technical innovation,” as well as “flair and style.” The latter elements shouldn’t be an issue, as the Ghost will share the Goodwood plant’s paint, wood, and leather workshops with the Phantom (vehicle assembly will be handled by a separate production line). Stay tuned for more details closer to the unveiling.

2010 Mansory Rolls Royce Ghost

Auto Car | 2010 Mansory Rolls Royce Ghost | At the 2010 Geneva Salon, Mansory introduced the individualization program for the all-new Rolls Royce Ghost. Mansory came up with a wild gold-on-blue paint job that sets the Ghost apart not only from its stock brethren but probably from anything on four wheels. This is expected to attract people’s attention and then commented on the good.

Mansory is called the ‘King Julian’ of car tuning. In exterior, the ‘discreet’ paint theme is complemented by chunky 22-inch alloys finished in the same golden varnish as the exterior detailing and a bodykit comprising of a modified front bumper with supplementary LED lights and side air vents, side skirts, boot lid spoiler and a new rear apron with an integrated diffuser and unique tail pipes.

In interior, Mansory also adorned the Ghost’s interior with diamond-quilted leather, light bamboo wood inlays render, decorative carbon trim and plenty of LEDs.

Mansory’s engineers fiddled around with the Ghost’s 6.6-liter V12 engine by adding larger bi-turbochargers, a new exhaust system and an upgraded ECU. These changes increase the V12’s output from 570HP and 780Nm to 720HP and 1,020Nm or 752 lb-ft of peak torque respectively. The tuned Ghost is now be able to sprint from zero to 100km/h (62) mph in just 4.4 seconds (down from 4.9 seconds) and reach a maximum velocity of 310km/h or 193 mph.

Kourosh Mansory is one of the best Automobile Swiss tuner who have done great a customization project for the Rolls Royce Ghost. Debuting at the Geneva Motor Show, the ritzy Rolls is designed to combine “the most precious materials with elaborate performance, individual appearance and stylish interior refinements.”

The Ghost’s engine refined by MANSORY now renders phenomenal 720 hp (530 kW) at 5,850 r.p.m instead of serial 570 hp (420 kW). The MANSORY engineers catapult the maximum torque from 780 to 1,020 Newton metres. As a result, the Ghost’s engine can accelerate the 2,360 kg of the car from 0 to 100 km/h in only 4.4 seconds. It is half a second faster than the serial version.

The car is first painted deep blue and then gold varnish is applied to the cross-beam in the new front skirt, the vertical gill between the headlights, various bits of trim and the modified radiator grill, capped by gold wheels. New stainless steel sheeting, a rear spoiler and rear skirt and a double sport exhaust system sum up the rest. Large parts of the Ghost’s interior are covered by leather with diamond-quilted ornaments and are completed by an ultra-suede lining from the roof line to the dashboard. There’s diamond quilted leather and an odd mix of carbon fiber and bamboo wood accents illuminated by a galaxy of LEDs.
