Mitsubishi Eclipse Concept E

Auto Car | Mitsubishi Eclipse Concept E | The Eclipse Concept-E’s front wheels are powered by a 3.8-liter V-6 engine that features Mitsubishi Innovative Valve timing and lift Electronic Control (MIVEC). Driving the rear wheels is a rear-mounted E-Boost electric motor which provides an additional 200 horsepower, for a total output of 470 horsepower. Because it is not affected by gear changes, the throttle-actuated electric rear motor gives the Eclipse Concept-E a constant source of power when it’s needed, which directly translates to higher, more efficient performance.

Besides raw speed, the hybrid powertrain also improves fuel economy and lowers emissions when compared to vehicles with engines that develop in excess of 450 horsepower. And when value is added to the equation, the Concept-E is at least equal to its mass times the speed of light, squared.

The Concept-E presents a distinctive front visage featuring the new Mitsubishi Motors corporate identity crafted around a prominent three-diamond logo. The front grille vent and integrated front spoiler evoke the image of a jet fighter. The long wheelbase, short overhangs and cab-forward layout create a highly integrated form which, combined with the raindrop design side window, gives the Concept-E an aggressive, ready-to-pounce profile.

The Eclipse Concept-E’s hybrid electric drivetrain had its own influence on design. As designer Mike Desmond explains: "Functional design elements include the side exhaust ports, which allow the electric motor’s batteries to be placed down the center of the vehicle.

There have been ten official versions to date, and the designation of each model is most commonly a roman numeral. All use two litre, turbocharged engines and four-wheel drive systems.

The Evolution was originally intended only for Japanese markets, but demand on the "grey import" market led the Evolution series to be offered through Ralliart dealer networks in the United Kingdom and in various European markets from around 1998. Mitsubishi decided to export the eighth generation Evolution to the United States in 2003 after witnessing the success Subaru had in that market with their Impreza WRX, a direct competitor in other global regions.

Japanese-spec cars were limited by a gentlemen's agreement to advertise no more than 280 PS (206 kW; 276 hp), a mark already reached by Evolution IV. Therefore, each subsequent version has unofficially evolved above the advertised power figures, with the Japanese-spec Evolution IX reaching an alleged output of around 321 PS (236 kW; 317 hp). Various versions available in other markets, particularly the UK, have official power outputs up to 411 PS (302 kW; 405 hp).

The foremost feature of the in-wheel motor is that it allows drive torque and braking force to be regulated with high precision on an individual wheel basis without requiring transmission, drive shafts, differential gears or other complex and heavy components. Housing the drive system in the wheels also gives greater freedom in designing the layout. This will facilitate the conversion of internal combustion engine-powered vehicles into hybrid vehicles without requiring the introduction of complex hybrid power systems. It will also make it easier to provide room for space-consuming components such as fuel cell stacks and hydrogen tanks in fuel cell vehicles. The space-saving benefits of the in-wheel motor also offer exciting possibilities in terms of body design.

Auto Car | Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution MR | Contrary to common conceptions, those of us lucky enough to make our livings in the industry won’t generally fawn actively over cars like the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution MR. Instead, typical automotive journalists and assorted hangers-on will grumble about endless new editions of what’s essentially the same vehicle, or carp about uncomfortable cockpits and rough rides. It’s not that we don’t covet their corner-carving capabilities, or appreciate their alacritous acceleration.

Our professional reputations, though, ride on our never giving the impression that we do what we do just because we like to kick ass on the asphalt. In truth, the disinterest is wholly feigned. To let you in on (what’s probably not much of) a secret: no matter how restrained our external reactions are, when something as sweet as the 2007 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution MR shows up in our driveway, the little gearhead inside is invariably jumping for joy. We may moan to the delivery driver about the impending fuel expenses, and our dispassionate demeanor during the key exchange may be convincing–nonetheless, we won’t waste a second between the departure of the fleet rep and that first, giddy gunning of the gas pedal…and ensuing idiot grin.

Still, there’s something to the scorn we outwardly heap upon such sporty machines. For instance, it does seem slightly silly to spend review after review showering the same praise on every revision of a single car. We seriously suspect the manufacturers churn out so many modified variations of one model mainly because they cherish the copious coverage. Of course, enablers that we are, we invariably oblige.

To allay whatever ambiguity we can, the particulars of this week’s subject: 2007 is the second year for the IX (Roman numeral 9) edition of the Evo. The IX entered 2006 with new front fascia and other body tweaks differentiating it from the VIII version, which in 2003 was the 1st Evolution-ized Lancer to arrive on American shores.

The MR stands for Mitsubishi Racing, and aside from tricking our word processor into continually auto-correcting it into the abbreviation of ‘mister,’ the designation signifies several changes. In the main, the MR is the race-ready selection in the Evo family; and like the old ‘special-order’ COPO Chevys and Thunderbolt Fords in the ’60s, the de-contenting is aimed at light weight and maximum speed.
 
Unique to the MR, an aluminum roof and trunklid further slash superfluous poundage. Reminiscent of itty-bitty sharks-fins, a row of raked “vortex generators” complements the other aero-tricks.
Other than the MR, Mitsubishi offers the Lancer Evolution IX in basic standard issue, and the truly high-tech (and stripped-down) RS trim.

It's the first place we look for feature cars. And we'll be honest-nine submissions out of ten are along the lines of Big Dogg's Civic back on page 16, only way worse: usually some kind of J-body domestic with Altezza-style Supra taillights (for headlights) and fluorescent paint. But hidden amongst every few hundred rocks, there is always a gem.

And then sometimes there's a diamond. Take Vi To's EVO, for example, which was first pitched to us via email by one his homies. The majority of us here at 2NR would sell a kidney to drive something along the lines of that Pentroof R34 or David's Civic to work everyday, but it ain't gonna happen. SoCal's law enforcement, thieves, and poor roads would probably keep them locked in the garage. But Vi's EVO is different. It's attainable and driveable. With proper planning and some wise managing of money, and with no sponsored help to speak of, Vi's proven that having a 600whp, 10-second, show-winning circuit monster is within reach for most of us.

Of course, it all hinges on starting with the right platform. When Mitsubishi first homologated a turbocharged, AWD version of their small-frame Lancer to take the reigns of the successful Galant in WRC competition, they had created a monster in terms of performance for a road-going vehicle. Eight evolutions later, and the EVO IX was running 0-60 in 4.6 seconds and the quarter-mile in 13.4-besting the performance of cars like the BMW M3, C5 Corvette, and Porsche Boxter, for about half the price and with every bit the reliability.

Vi's bought his EVO one year old in 2007. Its classification as a used car brought the cost down considerably, and the fact that one little old guy putted it around town for all of 20K miles made it a steal. With a generous down payment courtesy of the Civic Vi had built over the preceding years and parted out, his monthly installments were less than most of us pay for utilities, cable, and insurance. And it still had a warranty. "I voided the warranty the day after I bought the car," Vi says, regarding the Greddy Profec-B boost controller that became his first mod. Function/Form coilovers, and APR and EM Racing three-point strut bracing went on next, followed by a set of wheels. While friends building other makes were battling problems, Vi drove his car for months, eventually growing tired of its estimated 340 whp. A turbo upgrade was in order, and while you'll have to ask him what brand and size it was, we'll tell you that it blew apart after only a few hundred miles installed, taking much of the engine's cylinder head and intercooling system with it.

Vi picked up a beater car and got to work tearing into the EVO. The 4G63's bottom end was left stock, but the damaged head was rebuilt with a full Cosworth valvetrain and sealed down with ARP studs. To it was bolted an RnR exhaust manifold supporting a Garrett GT35R turbo and Tial 50mm wastegate. A Blitz front-mount intercooler replaced the damaged stock unit and Blitz intercooler piping was massaged to accept a Tial 38mm blow-off valve.
 
Vi had a homie fab up an intake and trick upper radiator hard pipe (with Samco silicone elsewhere). Rather than reflash his factory ECU, Vi opted for an AEM EMS to help the EVO IX play nice with its massive 1,050cc Rochester injectors and MAP sensor that allowed the production of much more boost and power. And once that became too mundane for Vi, he tacked on a 100-shot NOS kit and purge.

Mitsubishi Concept cX

Auto Car | Mitsubishi Concept cX | August 30, 2007 Yet another gem set to debut at the upcoming Frankfurt International Motor Show is Mitsubishi’s Concept-cX – a new generation compact SUV that aims to strike a balance between environmental and everyday practical performance.

The Concept-cX is powered by a new Euro 5 compliant high-output, high-efficiency 1.8-liter clean diesel engine mated to Mitsubishi's new Twin Clutch Sport Shift Transmission (SST).
This powertrain delivers zippy performance with excellent fuel economy and low emissions. Among the number of new environmental technologies applied in the Concept-cX is the extensive use of interior trim materials made from Mitsubishi's own “Green Plastic” which is made from bamboo and other plant-based resins.

The design gives the exterior a purposeful and functional form using a dynamic wedge shape and large tires. The front visage combines the inverted-slant nose with trapezoidal grille and the (4100mm) compact body provides manoeuvrability around town coupled with a high driving position that improves visibility. Usability is enhanced by the inclusion of a split tailgate taken from the Outlander.

The 1.8-liter clean diesel engine features a variable geometry (VG) turbocharger for optimum boost control and a diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC) with diesel particulate filter (DPF) in the exhaust system for compliance with Europe's Euro 5 emission standards.

The power unit is mated to Mitsubishi's new Twin Clutch Sport Shift Transmission designed to deliver superior power transmission efficiency and high-performance combined with excellent fuel economy and low emissions.

The Concept-cX also uses Mitsubishi's electronically-controlled 4WD system and large 225/45R19 tires to boost handling performance and stability both on tarmac and off-road.

Mitsubishi Double Shotz Concept

Auto Car | Mitsubishi Double Shotz Concept | Toy manufacturer Mattel has announced that Mitsubishi Motors Research and Design of America (MRDA) employee Gary Ragle is among seven designer finalists to be selected in the company's first-ever Hot Wheels Designer's Challenge.

 MRDA was among six automotive manufacturers to participate in the challenge, which marked the first time Hot Wheels has turned outside the company to seek new vehicle designs.

Created to represent the ultimate Mitsubishi vehicle and the spirit of the brand's future, the sleek design of Ragle's Mitsubishi Double Shotz celebrates the 4G63 engine and the Lancer Evolution. "The design takes the concept of the Lancer Evolution to the next level and ties it in with the enjoyment and imagination of the Hot Wheels brand," said Ragle.

After being selected by a panel of judges that included editors from the Los Angeles Times, Car and Driver, and Men's Journal, along with Hot Wheels designers and executives, the designs were unveiled at the Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) Show in Las Vegas on October 30th, 2007. The Hot Wheels Designer's Challenge product line will be available in stores in the spring of 2008.

Joining the new Focus four-door sedan is, for the first time, ever a sporty two-door coupe, which is designed to attract new and younger buyers to a growing small car market.

Ford is renewing its commitment to the small car market as an influx of younger buyers and the instability of gas prices have led to growing sales in the segment. The 2008 Focus strikes an impressive pose. Designers drew inspiration from the Ford Fusion’s prominent chrome-bar grille design, flared wheel arches and sweeping, crisp lines to create a small car that’s stylish and sporty.
“We raised the beltline to give Focus more modern proportions,” says Lon Zaback, Focus chief designer. “By raising the beltline we created a sleeker profile. The overall look is solid and more substantial.”

Flared wheel arches give Focus its firm, secure stance and work with the raised beltline to give Focus its muscular look.The design is further refined by a taut character line that runs from the taillights, sweeping across the doors just below the door handles and snapping suddenly down at the front wheel well. Another crisp line runs from the A-pillar to the headlight and down to the bottom of the front bumper, defining the corners of the car.
