Jeep Wrangler Unlimited 2007

Auto Car | Jeep Wrangler Unlimited 2007 | We started the day on the trail, specifically the Rubicon Trail. It's a legendary off-road route near Lake Tahoe, California, used by Jeep in the development of nearly all of its vehicles. It's not so much a trail as it is a series of loosely grouped boulders, ravines and ledges which leave just enough room to squeeze a well-driven four-wheel drive through, or in our case, a four-door Wrangler Unlimited.

That's right, a four-door Wrangler. It's the first one ever and unlike the previous Wrangler Unlimited, which was the stretched version of the standard two-door, the 2007 Wrangler Unlimited uses a 20.6-inch-longer wheelbase to make room for full-size rear doors. It's 5.5 inches wider than previous Wranglers, too, a trait it shares with the standard two-door model.

Actually, other than its longer wheelbase, extra doors and optional two-wheel drive, the Unlimited shares almost everything with the standard Wrangler. It comes in three trim levels — X, Sahara and Rubicon — and is powered by a 3.8-liter V6 with 202 horsepower and 237 pound-feet of torque. Its standard transmission is a six-speed manual; a four-speed automatic is optional.

All Wranglers also get a five-link straight axle suspension front and rear, revised shocks and springs, a recirculating ball steering system and a fully boxed frame that Jeep says is twice as stiff as the previous version.

2008 Jeep Renegade Concept

Auto Car | 2008 Jeep Renegade Concept | Currently, three of my favorite SUVs are Jeeps. Well actually, my favorite is the new four-door Wrangler Unlimited, and I love the powertrain from the Grand Cherokee CRD. In an absolutely dissimilar way I also love the GC SRT8, but would never buy one unless money was no object, just because of fuel economy considerations. The diesel, mind you, is highly efficient and extremely powerful. The problem I have with Jeep is that this engine isn’t available in its most capable off-roader, the aforementioned Wrangler, as diesels are ideal for off-road applications thanks to their high torque bias and fuel efficiency … you can go farther into the bush without need of filling up, after all. And while Jeep isn’t about to custom-build the vehicle I want, they have come up with a concept that comes pretty close to answering my thrifty 4×4 needs.

Paying homage to Jeep’s Willys roots, the storied brand’s designers have created a most intriguing new concept, aptly dubbed Renegade. It’s sized more like the original JEEP, the wartime transport primarily built by Willys and Ford, a lightweight off-roader that was once sought after by off-road enthusiasts but are now worth so much to collectors they hardly see any rock crawling duty.

Jeep’s B-segment concept would be ideal for rock crawling, however, or mud slinging, sand digging, water fording, snow skidding or whatever you deem as a good time off-road. Unlike the Willys, or any production Jeep ever made, this prototype is only for two, perfect for those camping trips when three’s a crowd. And the lightweight Renegade is also a feel-good SUV in other ways, being the most eco-friendly vehicle to wear the most 4×4-capable Wrangler trim designation ever.

The Renegade doesn’t get a 3.0-liter, six-cylinder diesel like the GC, mind you, but at half the displacement a tiny 1.5-liter, three-cylinder Bluetec diesel is enough motivation to make this half-pint off-roader … well almost enough. Unlike its larger brother, the Renegade concept includes plug-in hybrid support, with a lithium-ion battery pack good enough for 40 miles of electric propulsion, powering electric motors at each axle.

“With an electric motor powering each axle, the Jeep Renegade concept is designed for a ‘hang on and have fun experience,’” commented Tony Shamenkov, Jeep Renegade concept principal exterior designer.

Dual 200 kilowatt (268 horsepower) electric motors push and pull a fully capable 4×4 system that includes a low range of gears and locking differentials. Enhancing its efficiency, the Renegade also uses a similar regenerative braking system as other hybrids, and all combined the little 4×4 can achieve a 400 miles range, which is a lot of bush whacking.

As important to some, the Bluetec diesel generates an additional 115-horsepower when called upon and compared to conventional gasoline powered engines it reduces emissions and fuel consumption substantially. Just how thrifty is it? Well, it can achieve an equivalent petroleum fuel economy of 110 mpg, which is four-to-five times the ability than an equivalent gasoline-only SUV, according to Jeep.

The Renegade’s lightweight aluminum structure adds to its eco-friendliness without detracting from crashworthiness thanks to its rigid construction, and aluminum is a fully recyclable material, of course, adding to the little ute’s cradle to grave environment footprint. Jeep makes the point that most of the Renegade is recyclable … all good as far as sustainability goes. In this respect, the Renegade’s lithium-ion battery packs are much friendlier to Mother Nature than nickel metal hydride batteries, what every production hybrid is currently using.

All you have to do is look at it to see that this little SUV fits in well within the elements. Not only does its Palm Metallic exterior hue camouflage well in the woods, but its big, extended wheel arches are classic Jeep, shielding massive wheels and beefy tires, while its low profile “speedster” windscreen gives it a race-truck appearance. In back it features what Jeep calls “deconstructed rubber-clad headlamps and tail lamps” … OK? The “just-for-fun elongated triangular openings in each of the two sculpted doors” work well too, adding an airy feeling even when the doors are closed. This in mind, the Renegade concept has no roof, although an integrated roll bar makes sure occupants will be kept safe if it suffers a rollover. To compensate for its lack of a top, Jeep has supplied a variety of “lids” for the cargo deck behind the seats, starting with a “plain lid” or specific lids designed for stowing gear and others for mountain biking and kayaking. Also as part of the concept package are fluid-fill caps, a plug-in port and a first-aid kit.

Interior materials were designed with recycling in mind as well, with one-piece molded soy-based foam seats and doors, a single-piece co-molded instrument panel with a urethane skin, a co-molded aluminum/silicone steering wheel, a one-piece molded chassis created without using environmentally-harmful resins, and a one-piece molded interior compartment “tub.” According to Jeep, the kind of environmental stewardship that went into designing Renegade’s cabin aligns with its “harmony with nature” philosophy.

“The Jeep Renegade concept’s interior — actually the entire vehicle — is designed to minimize the number of parts necessary for assembly and function,” commented Scott Anderson, the SUV’s principal interior designer. “We designed the Renegade with an eye toward simplification of systems, both in parts and processes.”

Jeep cites the heating, ventilation and air conditioning system as an example of such forward thinking processes, stating that it isn’t coolant-based, and that the color, grain and gloss of interior components are molded in a single piece. Jeep even goes so far as to make the lightweight composite body’s matte exterior color molded right into the material instead of painted on, making it so no harmful solvents were needed.

What else makes it a conscience-light 4×4? While the “dual-cockpit” primary gauge package is designed for left- or right-hand drive, streamlining the build process, which also saves money, no conventional wiring system is needed. Rather, the Renegade’s thin multi-plane acrylic instrument pod, which is mounted on the steering column, is a “sealed, self-contained” wireless unit that is interchangeable by the dealer or customer. An exposed horizontal beam incorporating a power strip holds the hollow dash panel in place, while, yaw, pitch and roll indicators are fitted to the passenger side. An interface similar to the gauge cluster fits into the center stack, and it swivels at center to allow an optimal view from either occupant. And just in case you’re thinking this Jeep is all about lightweight fun without any concern for safety, the prototype comes with “separately-configured, impact-absorbing, vinyl-wrapped knee-blockers” that “float” below the car-wide beam.

The flat-bottom steering wheel is similar in design to Audi’s R8 rim, nice company indeed, only this version, covering a regulation airbag, incorporates a rotating circular LED screen that lets the driver select a given drive mode. For putting the car in Drive, Reverse or Park, translucent shift buttons are colored red or green … you figure out for what purpose. Lower down, “hollow-section, billet-formed pedals” are positioned above the tub floor.

As mentioned, the Renegade’s doors are hollowed out, and while this well-ventilated alternative might be nice in the summer, Jeep includes remote pull “handles” to cover them up with canvas panels when the weather is less inviting.

With no roof, however, Jeep needed to make sure that the Renegade’s “contoured, figure-form seats” expelled rain, and therefore covered them in scuba-like waterproof material that is “soft-touch and flexible”.

“Inspired by the simplicity and functionality of scuba diving gear, we wanted the interior of the Jeep Renegade concept to be weather-tight and durable,” Anderson added.

The seats also boast integrated seatbelts and unorthodox hollow, upside-down “U-shaped” headrests. As mentioned, the seat cushions are made of a urethane skin with soy-based foam that’s “co-molded with a composite substructure”.

An item that I really like, and could see myself using on camping trips is a “thermal unit” integrated into the center stack that plugs into the Renegade’s electrical battery pack, allowing food to be heated or cooled.

Unlike the Honda Element’s all-plastic interior surfaces, the Renegade has been designed for easy cleaning. Yes, you can actually hose it down thanks to wireless electronics. A drain has been fitted into the floorboard, while the floor mats have been formed to flow water toward the drain hole.

Even if the Renegade wasn’t the ultimate earth-friendly sport utility, I couldn’t help falling for it as it looks so good. Its two-seat configuration would make it a no-go for me and my five-person family, but I could see younger people and older empty-nesters buy into something this thrifty, and stylish. Considering that the smart fortwo sells well and only seats two, the Renegade begins to make sense. A roof would be needed, of course, but nothing more than a removable soft-top. Yes, I think that Jeep’s certainly onto something here.

2009 Jeep Lower Forty

Auto Car | 2009 Jeep Lower Forty | There is no shortage of Jeep vehicles at the SEMA Show, but our guess is there's never been one like this before. First debuted at the Moab Easter Jeep Safari last April, the Lower Forty is equipped with 40-in. tires (about ten inches taller than normal), a 5.7-liter Hemi, a six-speed Getrag gearbox, and front and rear heavy-duty Dana axles (44 and 60, respectively). The bulletproof live axles were built by DynaTrac and have 5.38:1 gears to allow for the lowest possible crawl speeds when in four-wheel drive low range, and, of course, both sport locking differentials.

Our SEMA coverage generally doesn’t include too much from the off-road segment, but the Jeep Lower Forty concept in the Mopar booth was too good to pass up. Sporting 40-inch Mickey Thompson tires, this Jeep can pretty much go wherever it wants without the help of a suspension lift. Granted, plenty of bodywork was removed to make the new rubber fit, but impressive nonetheless. A 5.7-liter Hemi V8 sends grunt to a six-speed manual transmission before hitting all four wheels via a Dana 44 front axle and a Dana 60 rear axle fitted with 5.38 gears.

Additional features include a carbon fiber hood, custom bikini top, a chopped windshield, and a color-matched interior with Katzkin leather seating.

The Jeep “Lower Forty” takes the Jeep Wrangler platform to a new extreme. The vehicle is equipped with massive 40-inch x 13.5-inch tires mounted on Mopar’s 20-inch forged-aluminum wheels. Mopar added aggressive wheels and tires to a stock, two-door Jeep Wrangler Rubicon without the use of a suspension lift. The team’s goal was to achieve added ground clearance without dramatically altering the vehicle’s center of gravity. The team removed copious amounts of body metal in order to provide room for 40-inch meats. Three inches are chopped from the windshield frame and a 10-degree rake is added.

Custom front and rear fender flares are 1-inch wider and are located 4 inches higher than a stock Jeep Wrangler. A new one-piece carbon-fiber hood with a Jeep CJ-like power dome and an all-new drop-down tailgate stamped with the “Jeep” logo are added to complete the exterior design. On the interior, an all-new roll cage is neatly integrated into the body tub and tied directly into the frame rails. A custom made bikini top from Bestop keeps drivers in the shade. The spare tire is relocated to the cargo floor and a custom cargo rack, supplied by Poly Performance, holds extra gear. Once all body modifications were completed, the exterior received a fresh coat of Red Eye No. 3 paint, a custom color developed by Mopar.

Custom touches throughout the interior include a color-matched center console and instrument panel. Seats are re-covered with Mopar’s Katzkin leather package in a two-tone scheme. Replacing the carpet is a durable, spray-in truck-bed liner. Rugged Mopar floor mats complete the theme.

Mechanical upgrades came directly out of the Mopar catalog. The Jeep “Lower Forty” features an all-new 5.7-liter HEMI® V-8 engine and a Getrag 238 six-speed manual transmission. Powertrain installations were handled by Burnsville Off-Road using an AEV 5.7-liter HEMI V-8 conversion kit.

The Mopar-supplied Dana 44 front axle and a Dana 60 rear axle, fitted with 5.38 gears and ARB air lockers, were assembled by Dynatrac and revalved Bilstein shocks maintain vehicle stability on rough terrain.

2009 Jeep Wrangler Overland

Auto Car | 2009 Jeep Wrangler Overland | The Mopar Jeep Wrangler Overland was designed to be an ultimate camping vehicle.  The Wrangler’s rear seats were removed in favor of a rubberized cargo area for anything from firewood to camping gear to man’s best friend, and once in the woods there is no need to rush home as the roof of this vehicle folds out a two person Simpson II tent and touring awning.  To help the Mopar Jeep Wrangler Overland get through the toughest spots the wilderness has to offer, the Wrangler has received a 3-inch suspension lift to make room for the 35-inch off road tires.

To make the Wrangler Overland safer when off-roading, it features a set of steel AEV bumpers, and a Warn 9.5ti winch.  Also, additional lights have been mounted around the front end, and a Mopar hood and snorkel help to keep the Wrangler Overland supplied with plenty of cold air and room to vent its heat when it hits the trails.

Mopar Jeep Wrangler Overland Image Vehicle: A Stop-anywhere, Camp-anywhere Jeep
The Jeep Wrangler Overland is perfect for those craving travel and adventure. The Mopar design team took a 2009 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon and turned it into a mobile “on-the-go” self-contained campsite.

To increase cargo capacity for hauling gear, the Jeep Wrangler Overland’s rear seats are replaced with a large, flat, rubberized utility floor. Mounted to the cargo rack is an all-new ARB two-person Simpson II rooftop-mounted tent and touring awning. The interior of the Jeep Wrangler Overland features water-resistant Mopar front-seat covers, rugged Mopar slush mats, a Daystar dash bin and lower switch panel that powers added accessories.

Enhancing off-road travel is an American Expedition Vehicles’ (AEV), Nth Degree, 3-inch suspension lift and a Full Traction rear sway bar. The lift allows aggressive 35-inch tires mounted on 17-inch steel Mopar winter/off-road wheels to fit under the Jeep. Additional off-road protection at the front and rear is provided by AEV steel bumpers and for added security, a Warn 9.5ti winch.

In order to prepare the Jeep Wrangler Overland for desert duty, an AEV Jeep Wrangler heat-reduction hood and snorkel kit is fitted to the vehicle. Mopar windshield-mounted off-road lights and Daystar bumper-mounted lights provide additional lighting for nighttime and off-road driving.

2010 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT-8

Auto Car | 2010 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT-8 | The Grand Cherokee SRT8 is the fastest vehicle in the Jeep lineup: a different kind of animal than what the brand is known for. Chrysler’s street racing engineers utilized four-wheel drive to enhance power as opposed to off-road handling, delivering a zero-to-sixty time under five seconds.

Special ground effects limit the SRT8 model to paved roads. I had difficulty backing out of my driveway without hitting the front fascia, designed to enhance airflow, on the apron. Twenty-inch forged aluminum wheels come with run-flat tires can run up to fifty miles with no air pressure on the highway. The tires eliminate weight from a spare, but are completely impractical off-road.

Having said that, the Grand Cherokee SRT8 fits most of the other squares active buyers need to fill. It can hold up to five passengers, has a large enough cargo area to hold a bicycle, and tows up to 3500 pounds, meeting our minimum ALV standards.

Best of all, the hot rod Grand Cherokee is a hoot to drive. While Jeep enthusiasts will immediately see differences in appearance between the stock Grand Cherokee and its SRT cousin, most drivers cannot. There’s nothing more fun than pulling up next to a pony car at a stoplight, and blowing it away off the line. I found the stunt so entertaining that I had to repeat it half a dozen times during my test drive.

Base price on the Grand Cherokee SRT8 is $43,325, not including a $780 destination charge.

At the heart of the Grand Cherokee SRT8 is a 420-horsepower hemi engine. The engine produces peak torque of 420 foot pounds at 4800 rpm, giving it excellent acceleration off the line. A five-speed automatic transmission includes manual gear selection to add some fun on twisting roads.

A cat-back exhaust system that includes two, four-inch exhaust pipes helps to push air through the engine. The exhaust lets out a pleasing belch during hard acceleration: the car’s way of saying “thank you” for the 91-octane gasoline it requires.

Since the Grand Cherokee is engineered strictly for on-road use, the four-wheel drive system utilizes a single-speed transfer case. Four-wheel drive enhances vehicle performance on slippery roads by automatically sending engine power to the wheels with the best traction. The twenty-inch wheels and low-profile tires give the Grand Cherokee an exceptionally large, stable footprint.

The suspension is surprisingly refined, considering that the Grand Cherokee’s live rear axle. Monotube shock absorbers and large stabilizer bars on both axles keep the chassis flat in the corners. I took some decreasing radius turns at highway speeds, as well as on a two-lane road outside of town, and was impressed by how well the Grand Cherokee responded.

Steering feedback from the rack-and-pinion system is excellent. The Grand Cherokee SRT8 maintains positive on-center response at speed, while providing plenty of low-speed assist for maneuvering around parking lots. Its 37.1-foot turning radius is pretty good, considering the car’s long wheelbase.

Visibility is quite good to the front and sides. Over-the-shoulder visibility, in particular, is excellent. A rearview camera eliminates blind spots to the back of the vehicle, making it easier to parallel park. The rearview camera is part of an option package that also adds navigation, remote start, dual-zone climate control, heated front seats, a special instrument cluster with performance pages and adjustable pedals ($2045).

The Grand Cherokee can hold up to five passengers, though legroom in the second-row center position is limited due to the center console. The SRT team installed heavily bolstered seats up front to keep the driver and passenger in place. Unfortunately, the seats have terrible lower lumbar support. I found it uncomfortable to sit in the car for more than an hour.

Adjustable pedals and a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel allow smaller drivers to maintain a safe distance from the front airbag and a clear forward view. Two-position seat memory makes it easier for multiple drivers to share the car. The driver can access performance pages using steering wheel controls. They include quarter mile time, zero-to-sixty acceleration, and average fuel economy. I averaged 13.7 miles-per-gallon on the test drive: slightly higher than the EPA estimate.

Overhead reading lamps for both rows of passengers and a dome light in the cargo area illuminate the interior at night. All passengers have ample access to map pockets and cupholders. There are two, 12-volt power points in the center stack, and one in the cargo area. A 115-volt outlet behind the center console allows rear passengers to plug in games or a computer.

Second-row seats have enough head, leg and hip room for smaller adults, though legroom in the middle position is fairly limited. Passengers with limited mobility may have a hard time climbing in back, since the rear wheel arches impinge on the door opening.

An option on the test car adds an audio upgrade with a large subwoofer in the cargo area. The sound is great, but the component makes it harder to load in large cargo, especially bicycles.

Without the upgrade, the cargo area functions well for active lifestyles. The driver can open the rear glass separately for loading in smaller items. Lift-over height is pretty good for a SUV, making easier to load in large cargo. A small storage area under the cargo floor keeps valuables hidden from sight.
