2009 Hamann Imperator based on Bentley Continental GT Speed

Auto Car | 2009 Hamann Imperator based on Bentley Continental GT Speed | HAMANN unveiled details of their latest upgrade package for the Bentley Continental GT and the c Continental GT Speed called the HAMANN IMPERATOR. HAMANN completely reconstructed the front of the four-seater. Larger air inlets in connection with perfectly integrated daytime running lights give the Bentley an even more dynamic face. The HAMANN IMPERATOR Bentley Continental GT Speed also includes a new exhaust system and engine management system that takes the power up by 40hp/29kW and 90 Nm for the GT Speed and by 70hp/52kW and 90 Nm for the GT.

Sportive elegance is the hallmark of the HAMANN-IMPERATOR design: In order to meet the high expectations in its appearance and aerodynamics, the HAMANN -designers completely reconstructed the front of the four-seater. Larger air inlets in connection with perfectly integrated daytime running lights give the Bentley an even more dynamic face. Additionally, the newly designed front optimises the air flow and therefore reduces the lifting forces at the front axle. Impressive extensions at the front and rear wings broaden the IMPERATOR by 70 millimetres and are contribute significantly to the powerful overall impression of the HAMANN modification. The HAMANN side skirts were modelled in such a way that they calm the air flow at the sides and make the noble sports car look even lower and more elongated. In order to reduce the lifting forces at the rear axle, the HAMANN technicians fitted an elegant spoiler on the original boot lid of the Bentley and combined it with a diffuser rear skirt for additional downthrust.

Impressive in terms of dimension and design – the new light alloy wheel ANNIVERSARY RACE ´´ANODIZED´´ Matching the striking appearance of the IMPERATOR, HAMANN uses new rims of the type ANNIVERSARY RACE ´´ANODIZED´´ in the dimension 22 inches. The exceptionally light, multi-part forged wheel has a high-gloss polished rim flange and a black anodized rim star. The recommended wheel/tyre combination for the front is 10.5Jx22 inches with tyres measuring 265/35 R 22. At the rear, 11.0Jx22 inch rims are used with tyres measuring 305/30 R 22.

HAMANN even offers a 21-inch alternative. Under the designation DESIGN EDITION RACE ANODIZED the refiner offers an ultra-light forged wheel which unites sportiness and elegance in its design. The black rim star and the titanium bolts emphasise the dynamics of the wheel while the high-gloss polished rim flange confirms the noble look. HAMANN offers the 21-inch wheel with tyres sized 295/30 R 21.

The new aluminium wheels are especially put in the limelight with the special chassis springs which lower the centre of gravity of the Continental GT by 30 millimetres at the front and 20 at the rear axle. At the same time, the handling of the sports car is significantly enhanced.

With a powerful performance enhancement, HAMANN offers the core part of the refining programme. The upgrade includes a sports end muffler with oval stainless steel end pipes and a new engine management. The result for the Continental GT Speed engine is an extra output of approx. 40hp /29kW and a torque increase by 90 Newton metres. The aggregate of the Continental GT even improves by 70hp/52kW and advances its torque by an additional 90 Nm. In addition, the maximum speed for both engines rises by approx 5km/h compared to their serial counterparts.

An interior highlight is the ergonomically newly designed 3-spoke sport steering wheel. Due to its new shape it lies much better in the hand and still offers all functions of the serial steering wheel. In the HAMANN upholstery, the wheel is covered with most precious leather and enhanced with applications made of carbon fibre – this perfectly goes with the multi-part interior set made of same material. No matter if you are looking for black piano finish, leather or ultra-suede – we have everything that makes your heart beat faster. From the personalised floor mat set to a complete leather trim, everything is produced with artisan precision. Individually designed and fitted in the car by expert hand.

2009 MTM Bentley Continental GT Birkin Edition

Auto Car | 2009 MTM Bentley Continental GT Birkin Edition | MTM has unveiled a Birkin Edition upgrade for the Bentley Continental GT, GTC, GT Speed, GTC Speed, Flying Spur and Supersports. With MTM’s Birkin Edition kit, the Continental GT, GTC and Flying Spur series can be upgraded with an exclusive and sporty look, fully in line with the legendary Bentley Boys, who exerted such an influence on the racing scene around 75 years ago.

The modified performance data with which MTM has revived the Bentley cannot be documented in purely technical terms, but performance is also proved on the track in the true sense of the word “experience”. The MTM Bentley took three seconds off the standard counterpart on the short Hockenheim circuit, and also three seconds in the 0 to 200 km/h sprint, which the MTM Bolide achieved in 15.9 seconds. No wonder: With his great love for detail and technical efficiency, the developer Roland Mayer pushed the crucial 90 more Hp out of the 12-cylinder standard engine at Wettstetten near Ingolstadt. 650 Hp is the result, and the in-house performance tests recorded 795 Nm, supported by a perfectly coordinated exhaust system with muffler and throttle control which, in addition to the increased performance, delivers a beguiling sound.

As far as the optics and external appearance are concerned, MTM has made no obvious changes to the bodywork. The four-pipe exhaust system with MTM’s F-Cantronic gives the tail its visual effect: approximately 30 mm lower than in the standard series. The small intelligent electronic control unit lowers the 2.4-tonner by 35 mm at the rear axle and by around 25 mm at the front axle. Combined with 21-inch alloy rims, the timeless Bimoto design lends an exclusive, sportier look to the Bentley, which not only offers more dynamics to buyers of new vehicles, but will also appeal to those who already drive a Bentley.

The exteriors feature the door handles, alloy wheels, stylish body structure, mirrors, headlights and taillights. The interiors feature the leather seats, sporty steering wheel, air conditioning system, audio system and instrument panels.

MTM charges €20,000 for their new kit including VAT and a TÜV certificate.

2009 Premier4509 Bentley Continental GT

Auto Car | 2009 Premier4509 Bentley Continental GT | Premier4509 has done it again! They created an extraordinary aerodynamic tuning kit for Bentley Continental GT. They will make 100 versions of this car tuning kit and each of them will have a special identification number. The kit is manufactured manually from carbon fiber and glass fiber, and it consists of a front bumper, rear bumper, side skirts, rear spoiler, and wing extensions that add 4 inches to the car’s initial width.

The grill and exhaust system are also made by Premier4509 to fit this kit for the Bentley Continental GT.  The all black rims have a very deep dish and they come from PLV. Next year, the Japanese tuning company has several other projects, and they will create exterior tuning kits for cars like Lamborghini, Aston Martin, and Maserati.

Common adjectives applied to tuner-modified Bentleys include: gaudy, excessive, and hideous. The Premier4509 won't be falling victim to such criticism, however, as its sleek lines and highly aerodynamic profile actually fit with the overall theme of the car.

Rather than going the route of its last wide-bodied aero kit for the Bentley Continental GT, Premire4509 has taken a more tasteful tack for the 2009 update. This version will only be available to 300 customers, however, with the company limiting output to keep the look exclusive.

“The response to the wide body package has been over whelming and there is a large demand to debut a non-wide version. We didn’t want to do an exact replica of the wide body version, so we have made some changes to differentiate the two designs,” said company president H. Yokomaru.

The kit includes a replacement front bumper, side skirts, rear bumper, six-piece grille set, rear deck spoiler (the sole flirtation with poor taste) and new exhaust tips.

No pricing on the conversion has yet been released, but considering the car and the special-edition nature, expect a proportionate price tag.

2010 Bentley Continental Flying Spur Speed China

Auto Car | 2010 Bentley Continental Flying Spur Speed China |  China’s 2010 Beijing Motor Show is currently hosting two special edition Bentley models for the Chinese market. First up would be the Bentley Continental Flying Spur Speed China special edition, a four-door-luxury sedan with features built for Chinese customers.

Bentley have added a new ‘comfort’ suspension, they have retuned the exhaust so that it is quieter, and finally they have added various Speed China branding to the vehicle. Interior changes include new rear leather cushions with the Bentley logo.

Combine luxury with speed and what you will get is the 2010 Bentley Continental Flying Spur Speed China. The fastest luxury car in the world did not earn the adjectives ‘fastest’ and ‘luxury’ for no reason. The Bentley’s 6 liter W12 engine lets it run up to 200 mph, with an acceleration of 62 mph achieved in 4.5 seconds. It has twin turbochargers for great power, and lists 552 counts of hp. To match its impressive speed, a set of sporty multi-spoke Speed wheels that measure 20 inches each are fitted, alongside a retuned exhaust system for quieter times behind the wheel. The car’s suspension system also grants ease and comfort to both passenger and driver.

Moreover, the design of the luxury car carries all the features that are definitely “Bentley”, but with some minute additions that gives its own distinctive character. This edition’s treadplates and wing badges are adorned with a notable badge on the middle console. The signature “B” emblem of Bentley is also attached to both of the C pillars.

Inside the car are the luxurious embroidered leather cushions that promise satisfying comfort. The ignition key for each Bentley unit is also housed in a specially designed display case.

2010 Bentley Continental Supersports

Auto Car | 2010 Bentley Continental Supersports | The Continental Supersports is the fastest, most powerful Bentley ever with 630PS (621 bhp) 0-60 mph in 3.7 seconds (0-100 km/h in 3.9 seconds) and a 204 mph (329 km/h) top speed

The Supersports reaffirms Bentley’s environmental commitment with the launch of its first FlexFuel performance car. The Supersports combines the looks of the iconic GT with a distinctive style that reflects its supercar character. The Supersports is the extreme Bentley delivering a highly focused driving experience – a muscular two-seater that is 110 kg lighter than the Continental GT Speed.

(Bentley Motors, Crewe. 25 February 2009). The Continental Supersports is the fastest and most powerful Bentley ever. It is the extreme Bentley, a muscular two-seater that delivers supercar performance and a highly focused driving experience.

The Supersports is also the first Bentley capable of running on both petrol (gasoline) and biofuel, pioneering the use of FlexFuel technology in the luxury sector. This represents stage one of the company’s commitment to make its complete model range compatible with renewable fuels by 2012.

Available worldwide from autumn 2009, the Continental Supersports will be FlexFuel compatible in the majority of markets from launch with North American cars offering the capability by summer 2010, following regulatory approval.

The Continental Supersports began as an ‘under the radar’ project exploring the possibilities of weight reduction on the Continental GT but with more power and torque. A largely experimental process crystallised over a period of 24 months into an official new car programme, driven by the passion and enthusiasm of a small group of Bentley engineers and designers.

The results are dramatic. With 630PS (621 bhp) and new ‘Quickshift’ transmission that halves shift times, the Supersports sets new performance benchmarks for Bentley. It accelerates from 0-60 mph in 3.7 seconds (0-100 km/h in 3.9 seconds) onto a top speed of 204 mph (329 km/h).

Supercar performance is complemented by an array of chassis enhancements including retuned steering and suspension, utilising lighter weight components, retuned dampers and anti-roll bars.

Agility is further sharpened by the 40:60 rear-biased torque split for the all-wheel drive system, a wider rear track, bespoke lightweight 20-inch alloy wheels and a unique electronic stability programme.

Carbon ceramic brakes are standard fitment, benefiting steering response, grip and ride comfort, while saving weight. Overall, the engineering team have achieved a weight reduction of 110 kg (243 lb) compared with the Continental GT Speed.

The evolution of the Supersports’ design is very much a case of ‘form following function’ with new purposeful sculptural forms signalling the engineering changes beneath the skin.

For example, the increased power and torque of the W12 engine necessitated additional airflow to the twin turbocharger intercoolers and cooling system. Bentley’s designers responded with a purposeful and dramatic style that features large vertical intake apertures and twin bonnet vents.

Similarly, new flared rear wings that accommodate the 50 mm (2 inches) wider rear track are designed to emphasise the powerful stance of this ultra-high performance coupe. The resultant Supersports style combines the looks of the iconic Continental GT with a new and distinctive appearance that reflects its more extreme character.

The Supersports is further distinguished from its Continental coupe stable mates by a unique dark-smoked steel finish to all exterior ‘brightware’, including front grilles, lamp bezels, window surrounds and wheels. A complex ‘Physical Vapour Deposition’ process is applied to all stainless steel components to give a lustrous and highly durable finish. A car industry first, this process is normally used as a coating on industrial tools, watches and even hip replacement joints.

Fully embracing the extreme spirit of the Supersports, Bentley’s interior designers have created a unique ambience. The cockpit represents a dramatic re-interpretation of Bentley interior design in which carbon fibre and AlcantaraTM not only convey a sporting and contemporary style but also reduce weight.

The Supersports is a strict two-seater featuring all-new lightweight sports seats with carbon fibre clamshell rear panels. In the rear compartment, the seats are replaced by a stowage deck with a carbon fibre luggage retaining beam.

The new interior also provides a showcase for the skills of Bentley’s craftsmen and women at the company’s factory in Crewe, England. Signature premium grade leather and brightware are complemented by carbon fibre panels, replacing traditional wood veneers.

The Continental Supersports is capable of running on either petrol and E85 biofuel or any combination of the two. E85 biofuel can offer a reduction of up to 70 per cent in CO2 emissions on a ‘well-to-wheel’ basis.

Well-to-wheel is a measurement of a fuel’s net CO2 contribution to the atmosphere, not just tailpipe emissions. It is a way of quantifying how much CO2 a fuel emits from its growth or extraction (well) to its combustion or deployment (wheel). It includes refinement, distillation and transport of the fuel.

The fuel supply system detects the blending ratio of the fuel in the tank and ensures that power and torque remain constant regardless of the ratio of petrol to biofuel. The result is seamless power delivery in the Bentley tradition.

The ‘Supersports’ name is inspired by the original two-seater 3-litre Supersports model introduced in 1925, itself an evolution of the 3-litre Speed. The lightweight, 85 bhp Supersports was the first production Bentley to reach 100 mph and was also renowned for the application of Le Mans-winning race technology.

Commenting on the new Supersports model, Dr. Franz-Josef Paefgen, Bentley’s Chairman and Chief Executive said:

“The Continental Supersports reflects the passion and enthusiasm of Bentley’s engineers and designers. This is the fastest, most extreme Bentley ever, dramatically styled to underline its supercar character. Importantly, it also pioneers the use of FlexFuel technology in the luxury sector.

2010 Bentley Continental GT Design Series China

Auto Car | 2010 Bentley Continental GT Design Series China | China is, perhaps surprisingly, a big market for Bentley. Since starting Chinese sales in 2002, sales have grown tenfold, making the Asian country Bentley’s third-largest market. And so it makes sense that the brand would offer a couple of China-exclusive special editions, both of which were unveiled at the Beijing auto show.

Continental GT Design Series China

The Continental GT Design Series China will be available in unique Orange Flame or Magenta Metallic paint. The interior surfaces feature a three-tone design that contrasts the primary leather, the seat and door inserts, and the interior accent trim. Accents are offered in orange or magenta—depending on exterior paint, of course—and can be applied to the seatbelts, floor mats, seat piping, or steering-wheel stitching. Lining the cabin is the customer’s choice of piano black, burr walnut, or exotic amboyna wood veneers. Design Series China badges adorn the center console, door sills, and front fenders. Although this package sounds really gaudy and tasteless, we think the orange car shown here actually works. We’ll withhold judgment on the magenta until we see some photos.

Continental Flying Spur Speed China

There’s also a special-edition Flying Spur Speed revised to suit Chinese tastes. Complementing the car’s performance abilities—we clocked a 4.2-second 0–60 sprint—the Spur Speed China has a new “Comfort” suspension setting and a quieter exhaust. Bentley says this achieves the higher levels of refinement and comfort sought by Chinese customers. We say the Speed’s exhaust note is too quiet to begin with, and the suspension is already adjustable. Don’t buy the Speed if you want soft.

Rear-seat passengers get treated to leather cushions embroidered with the Bentley winged logo, and the car comes with an extremely useful display case for the ignition key. The exterior C-pillars wear the Bentley “B” logo, and, like the Conti GT above, wears special badges on the center stack, door sills, and front fenders.

First Drive: 2011 Bentley Continental Supersports Convertible delivers the goods

Auto Car | First Drive: 2011 Bentley Continental Supersports Convertible delivers the goods |  2011 Bentley Continental Supersports Convertible. No, not the $280,000 asking price, or even the give-us-a-break curb weight of 5,269 pounds. We also aren’t talking about the fact that this basic chassis has been around since 2003. Nor are we concerned that there exist very few places on earth where you can even maybe-kinda-sorta properly experience the thrust of the Supersport’s twin-turbo 6.0-liter W12′s profligate output. Get this: 621 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 590 pound-feet of torque available between 2,000-4,500 rpm. Did we mention this one’s a convertible?

Furthermore, the topless Supersports’ problem does not involve the fact that there are very, very few people in its target demographic. You know, the guy that wants to take three members of his family for a ride at 197 mph with the top down (Bentley would like us to point out that with the top up, the Supersports Convertible will hit 202 mph). Thing is, out of the earth’s 6.7 billion inhabitants, there will surely be around 400 folks that fit the bill, coincidentally about the same number of these topless Supersports Bentley intends to build. No, the problem with the Bentley Supersports Convertible is that the preposterously humongous carbon-ceramic brakes feel a bit squishy coming down from 165 mph. Mind you, at 130 mph, the stoppers work like anchors.

The new-for-2011 Bentley Supersports Convertible is the latest and perhaps final iteration of the Continental lineup. As it stands, and for those of you not keeping track, Bentley will happily sell you no less than eight variants based on this platform, the Volkswagen Group’s D1 chassis shared with the ignoble but brilliant Volkswagen Phaeton. Quickly now, you can have the regular flavor Continental, the GTC (that’s the convertible), the Continental Speed (more power), the GTC Speed, the Flying Spur (four-door), Flying Spur Speed, the hardtop Supersports and now the Supersports Convertible. That’s, of course, here in America. Special editions pop up around the globe, with most of ‘em surfacing in China. And don’t act all shocked if a Flying Spur Supersports somehow shows up at your local Bentley dealer. As you may have guessed, with each new vehicle comes not only more capability, but a higher price tag, too. We already mentioned that the Supersports Convertible stickers for $280,400. What we didn’t mention are the $2,595 transportation fee, the $3,700 gas guzzler tax or the $7,100 for the 1,100-watt Naim sound system – a must-have option says us. That said, if you can even afford to consider buying Bentley’s fastest ever convertible, we have zero sympathy for any perceived nickle and diming. Besides, if you can’t afford the essentially three hundred grand that the Supersports Convertible will set you back, might we suggest the gentleman have a gander at the less muscular 600 hp, 553 lb-ft of torque GTC Speed, which starts at a more modest $230,000?

Speaking of the world’s fastest convertible, the Supersports is close, but not quite. First and foremost, you have the 253 mph Bugatti Veyron Grand Sport, plus a couple of Italian exotics that can probably go a mile or two per hour faster than the Supersports Convertible with the top stowed. However, this car is without question the world’s fastest four passenger convertible. The world’s most powerful, too. So potent in fact, that it was referred to as a “baby Grand Sport” more than once. Second fastest four-seater drop top honors belong to the Porsche 911 Turbo Cabriolet, which can shamefully only hit 194 mph sans its roof. We’re being sarcastic if you’re wondering. To illustrate just how far (and insane) open top motoring has come, consider that twenty short years ago, the fastest four-seat convertible was the BMW E30 M3 Cabriolet, sporting 215 hp and a top speed on par with a modern day Nissan Altima, and the Germans didn’t even have the decency to offer that model in the States. Even if there was a faster headless four-seater (like say the Jaguar XJS Convertible) we’re talking maybe 145 mph flat out. The Bentley is cracking 200 mph. Just to underline the obvious, the Supersports droptop is a certified freak.

But it’s a freak on paper. In reality, the 621 horsepower terror is one of the most elegant cars we’ve ever driven. The engine’s massive power comes on like a wave, surging a bit once it hits 4,000 rpm. But it’s never harsh, never undignified. Just smooth and mighty. Here’s an example: the large-yet-lithe land yacht is capable of hitting 0-60 mph in 3.9 seconds. For some perspective, a 1967 Shelby Cobra 427 requires 4.5 seconds and a 2011 Ford Shelby GT500 takes 4.2 seconds. Are there quicker cars? Of course, dozens – there’s even a faster Bentley, the hardtop Continental Supersports that does the deed in 3.7 seconds. But this topless Bentley has them all beat in terms of stately elegance. It’s safe to say, that those 3.9 seconds to 60 mph will be the most pleasant supercar-like accelerative moments of your life.

Why are we saying “supercar-like” as opposed to just plain old supercar? Well, anyone can make a heinously quick car – it’s just a matter of power versus weight plus traction. But it takes a certain X factor, a je ne sais quoi, a mysterious layer of something special, to make such a powerful automobile so refined, so recherché, so sumptuous, so preposterously well-bred and civilized. The term gran turismo has sadly been over-marketed to death recently, with the very marrow of the expression nearly boiled from its bones. The Bentley Supersports Convertible, however, is a proper grand tourer, a real GT. The kind of machine you dream about road tripping in, the sort that gobbles slabs of asphalt as if it were carpaccio. yet it remains so dignified we doubt it breaks a sweat. Then there’s the fact that the three-layer roof (which is nearly as quiet as a coupe when up) takes a leisurely twenty-five seconds to fold. Thing is, sitting there as the horizon opens up over your head, nothing could matter less than a fast top. In fact, owners will learn to savor those twenty-five seconds.

Please don’t think we’re in anyway saying this Supersports is soft. True, unlike the Coupe, the roadster has a back seat and weighs a little more (5,269 pounds for the Convertible as opposed to 4,939 for the hard top). Like in all convertibles, part of the weight gain is attributable to strengthening the chassis so as to make up for the loss of the roof’s rigidity. Of course, if you compare the Supersports Convertible to the GTC Speed, you will notice that Bentley managed to scrape away an unnecessary 198 pounds from the former. All the more impressive when you realize that they added more subframe-reinforcing to the Supersports. How strong are we talking? Lead Supersports engineer Paul Jones claims that if you were able to bolt a bare, body-in-white Supersports Convertible frame to a wall by the front of the chassis, you could hang a fully built car off the rear-end with only one degree of body flex. Somebody call Cialis, Bentley just came up with their next ad campaign.

Erectile dysfunction jokes notwithstanding, all that stiffness coupled to such a fiend of an engine wouldn’t amount to much if the Supersports was unable to put it all together. Thankfully for the few hundred well-heeled dudes that will own one, the ultimate Bentley convertible handles extremely well. With – in the classic German tradition – an engine hanging in front of the axle, we kept waiting for the ample brute to understeer, but it never did. Granted, given a large enough roadcourse, we’re sure we could invoke some push. But across Colorado’s glorious San Juan Skyway and Million Dollar Highway, bad manners were nowhere to be found. In fact, as you lay into the throttle, the Supersports Convertible’s reflexes seem to sharpen up. Like all great cars, it gets better as you go faster. While the car’s weight should be an issue, it simply isn’t. In fact, in terms of smoothness and composure, we’d argue that the Supersport Convertible’s girth is an asset. Sacrilege, we know.

On the suspension side of things, here’s what Bentley did to make the Supersports more of a stud than the already impressive GTC Speed: The front end features a 10 mm lower stance, an 8 percent stiffer roll bar and 35 percent stiffer bushings. The steering has also been retuned for more directness. In the rear, the stance is 15 percent lower, the rollbar is stiffer (Bentley doesn’t say how much), the software controlling the dampers has been retuned for more sportiness and the track has been widened by nearly two inches. Bentley’s also done their best to banish as much unsprung weight as possible. The blackish alloy wheels are 5.5 pounds lighter a pop, for an unsprung weight savings of 22 pounds. More impressively, the crash cymbal-sized carbon ceramic brakes save eleven pounds per wheels, for another 44 pounds off. That’s 16.5 pounds off per corner and the difference in composure and compliance shows. One side note – the front rotors on either Supersports, coupe or convertible, are the largest brakes on any passenger car in the world. We’re talking 16.54-inch diameter pieces in the front clamped by eight-piston calipers. The rear brakes also aren’t too shabby at 14-inches wide with two-piston calipers. In the interest of journalism we tried several repeated stops from 100 mph down to zero. While we did get a little play in the front wheels, we’ll put our hand on top of whatever you like and swear that the stopping distances got shorter.

Where were we? Right, the Supersports Convertible has superb handling. How would it do on a track? Totally not the point. The point of this leviathan’s fuss-free road manners are taking it down curvaceous stretches of mountain road while smling. It simply excels at the task. Even though you’re issuing the orders, you’ll find yourself shocked at how quickly and confidently the Supersports is able to catch the car in front of you. Then you have the redistributed torque-split, where 60 percent of the power is fed to the rear wheels, with the remaining 40 percent heading up front. The resulting rear-wheel bias is not only noticeable, but allows for some pretty sweet-feeling transitions as you muscle it around a bend. It’s as if the Bentley is not only on a different playing field (which, let’s be honest, it is), but is playing by different rules. Once you catch whatever it is in front of you, a simple flick or two of the left paddle shifter (the reprogrammed ZF six-speed auto allows two gears to be dropped at once) and you elegantly rocket by them, resisting the urge to disparagingly mutter “peasant” as you pass. Now’s probably the point where we mention that with the top dropped at 110 mph, you can carry on a normal, inside voices conversation with your passenger.

Though not with the back seat passengers. As the Supersports is billed as the world’s fastest four seat convertible, we figured that no review would be complete without testing the rear thrones at high speeds. Here’s the good news: A normal sized ( if not slightly pudgy) adult can fit in the back. With the top down, it’s even fairly easy to get seated 9though getting out is the least graceful aspect of the car). Once in place, it’s a tight fit, but we’d imagine journeys lasting up to an hour will leave the rear-seat occupant(s) no worse for wear. Longer than that, and the lack of being able to move your legs at all will start to be bothersome. While still not harsh in anyway, some of the front seats’ buttery evenness is missing in the rear. Still, our Bentley-baseball hat didn’t start to fly off until about 140 mph. Meaning Bentley’s got their wind-tunneling nearly down to a science. That said, the driver can’t hear a word you’re shouting to him over 100 mph.

As far as the front cabin goes, the single biggest weight saving measure deployed for the Supersports convertible are, in fact, the two main chairs. Instead of Bentley’s typical thoroughly British smoking lounge, are two Italian Sparco carbon fiber racing thrones, each of which is 45 pounds lighter than the seat it replaces. Part of being so light and racy involves full manual seat adjustments. You mean you don’t get 24-way adjustable vibro-massaging slings for $280,000? Nope, and once we had our seat adjusted (you can slide it forward/back and adjust the backrest angle) we never thought about it again. In fact, the seats are rather good looking, featuring diamond-stitched Alcantara with orange piping on the front and raw carbon fiber on the backside. They’re comfy, too. And let’s not forget the orange “Flying B” sewn into the headrests. Sadly, the rest of the cabin is trimmed out in carbon fiber and we have to say it’s our least favorite part of the car. Bentley chose to use a 65 percent gloss finish on the carbon fiber and some of our colleagues felt it should have been shinier. Shine or no shine, there’s just something tacky about carbon fiber interiors in a car like this. We would have been much happier with some nice, restrained pieces of wood. While not an official option, if you whip out a big enough checkbook, Bentley will happily chop a tree for you. Curiously, the carbon fiber interior bits are actually inlaid on top of wood veneers, which is another way of saying you can’t really take the Brit out of the Bentley.

Speaking of which, looking at the Supersports Convertible, it’s instantly clear that you’re looking at a proper Bentley. Or at least, a modern Bentley. So important to Bentley is this shape that not only did CEO Franz-Josef Paefgen recently say that the Continental is, “Our [Porsche] 911,” but we have it on very good authority that the next Continental will be instantly recognizable as such. Having said that, there’s much going on to distinguish the Supersports from the “lesser” Contis. As on the hard top SS, the front air intakes have been repositioned and made larger. The two inlets below the headlights are now vertical and do much more to cool the turbochargers. Bentley claims 10 percent better cooling, which is important as the big W12 engine is dealing with 37 percent more boost. You’ll also notice the twin heat extractor vents on the hood that Bentley assures us do what they look like they do (i.e. yank power-sapping heat out of the engine bay).

The sills have been tightened up for a sportier stance and the formerly fattish rear has been trimmed up nicely. You’ll also notice bigger tailpipes that increase breathing, which is one reason why the Supersports has so much power. There’s a spoiler to help with downforce at high speeds, and the rear fenders are all new to accommodate the widened track. You’ll also notice that most of the bright work is no longer that bright. Bentley calls it “Darkened Steel,” and they create it using a process called Physical Vapor Deposition (or PVD) that heats steel and paint up to 15,000 degrees centigrade, effectively bonding them. We think the results look sharp, and Bentley points out that despite its prodigious limits, the Supersports Convertible was designed with “mature drivers” in mind. Meaning that those seeking bling should look elsewhere.

We’d be derelict in our duties if we didn’t mention that the Supersports Convertible is the first Bentley to be 100 percent E85 capable. They’ve engineered a return-less fuel system with a sensor to detect whatever you’ve put in the tank. As ethanol is less energy dense than gasoline, the computer simply increases the fuel pump rate (up to 30 percent) to guarantee all 621 horsepower are present and accounted for. After 100 miles of driving, Bentley topped our tanks up with E85 and we detected zero difference in performance. A neat trick for sure, though it comes across as more of a greenwashing stopgap as opposed to something born out of a true concern for the environment. After all, the Supersports Convertible is rated at 12 mpg city/19 mpg highway. Still, if you ignore how E85 is made, you can achieve 70 percent fewer CO2 emissions than on straight gas.

Only a fool would consider the Bentley Supersports Convertible because of its green cred. However, wise million- and billionaires the world over will be looking at the latest from Bentley because it’s so damn splendid. They could even look at the purchase as an investment, because top-line variants like the Supersports are the cars that will be lighting up Concours around 2035. The Supersports Convertible is a dreamboat, a car that can not only wow you with potency, but sooth you with straight-up luxury. And that top goes all the way down. Did we mention the organ pulls? As we often say in these situations, man, oh man, do we wish we were rich.

2010 Bentley Continental Supersports Convertible

Auto Car | 2010 Bentley Continental Supersports Convertible | Bentley today opened up its new Continental Supersports Convertible – the soft-top version of the E85-swilling Supersports coupé. It's the fastest rag-top ever to roll out of Crewe's gates, hitting 60mph in 3.9sec and 202mph flat out.

The four-seater Conti Supersports Convertible follows closely the format of the 2009 coupé and arrives as Bentley has extended the Supersports' E85 diet across the entire 2011 model year Continental range. It's all part of Bentley's pledge to have every model biofuel-compatible by 2012, a key plank in its bid to make Bentleys acceptable in a carbon-crunched world.

Bentley's Continental Supersports Convertible, the world's fastest production drophead, made its official public driving debut at the 2010 Goodwood Festival of Speed. With several searing runs up the famous hill, it forcibly underlined its supercar performance credentials.

Throughout the weekend the Supersports Convertible, which is capable of a potential top speed of 202mph and a 0-60mph sprint time of 3.9 seconds, was piloted by the racing legend and honorary ‘Bentley Boy' Derek Bell who used his expert knowledge of the climb to set a series of typically rapid ascents and give the Goodwood spectators plenty to talk about.

The Supersports Convertible was joined in the supercar paddock by its equally powerful and capable coupe stablemate - the 621bhp Bentley Continental Supersports which returned to Goodwood after making its own debut in 2009.

Although some argue that biofuels offer questionable green credentials, Bentley points out that the well-to-wheel CO2 reduction stands at around 70%. Which helps assuage the guilt of its 17mpg combined economy figure and 388g/km of CO2.

It's blindingly fast, thanks to a stout 590lb ft of twist; I passengered race car veteran Derek Bell up the Goodwood hill climb in the Supersports coupé last summer and can vouch for the thrust on offer – it's quite astonishing for such a big car. The 90kg weight saving over the existing GTC Speed model helps, of course.

As with the coupé, the rag-top Supersports has tweaks across almost every aspect of its driveline and chassis. The six-speed ZF auto is programmed to mesh the next cog 50% faster for more brutal gearchanges and the the torque split is now rear-biased 60:40 to stymie understeer during hard cornering.

Don't worry if you want to mooch in your new top-dog Bentley cab; Crewe assures us the Supersports wafts as well as it weaves through the corners, with adjustable dampers to pamper or flatten.

2010 Bentley Mulsanne

Auto Car | 2010 Bentley Mulsanne | The 2010 Mulsanne was seen earlier last month at the 2009 Pebble Beach Concours D”Elegance in Monterey, California. Well, now the model has crossed the Atlantic and over to Frankfurt, Germany, where it is getting the world premiere it deserves.

At its Frankfurt debut, Bentley finally decided to reveal some technical specs of the Mulsanne. Power will come from a 6.75L twin-turbocharged V8 engine making 505-hp with a maximum torque of 725 lb-ft. Unfortunately, 0 to 62 mph and top speed figures were not released.

Bentley also showed the interior of the Mulsanne for the first time here in Frankfurt. The interior stays true to the classic signature features that have defined Bentleys from the 1920s to the present day; however, it now comes with some daily necessities like the start/stop engine button a multimedia system with 40GB hard disc drives satellite navigation, Bluetooth connectivity, mp3 player compatibility, a state-of-the-art 14-speaker audio system with Digital Signal Processing (DSP) and 6-CD autochanger and much more.

Sales of the Bentley Mulsanne will begin from mid-2010 with prices starting around $300,000.

During the individual training Bentley car to its owner opens a lot of excellent opportunities for creativity. In the customer’s disposal will be 114 colors for the exterior of the car, it’s as usual shades that have become part of history, and particularly glossy and pearl finish and duohromnye combination of luxurious materials. But the number of options is not limited to: the practice of work in order to be implemented in Bentley Mulliner, ensures that any requests for the original colors will be met in exact accordance with the tastes of the client.

Personalized system of unlocking the car without a key allows you to make a few pre-programmed configurations, and automatically adjusts the radio, telephone directories, seats, steering column and install the belt and electric blinds in the rear for the rear and side windows. For the first time in the world management system without a key means work with the door handle, stainless steel, which provides the point of contact, establishing communication with the key to its inspection and input. Bentley Mulsanne also features a keyless engine start, due button stop and start on the center console.
Expanded use of natural wood and leather, which gives the cabin an even more refined and luxurious look. Saved classic design features, vents, mirror wood veneers of high quality leather trim and hand-polished stainless steel, even better combined with new elements, great switches to the effect of glass – are a sign of respect for Bentley interiors of the past.

The new Mulsanne, designed and engineered at Crewe from the ground-up, reaffirms the marque’s intent to create a new flagship Bentley with refined performance, unparalleled levels of interior luxury and coach building skills to the fore. The return of the Mulsanne name underlines Bentley’s sporting heritage and passion for power and speed. Nothing reflects that prowess better than the legendary Le Mans 24 Hours, a race that Bentley has won on six occasions, where its powerful and reliable race cars thundered down the long Le Mans straight into the famous Mulsanne corner, from which the new model takes its name.

The design of the new Mulsanne is a unique fusion of sportiness, coachbuilt elegance and solidity. Echoing the Bentley S -Type of the 1950s, the Mulsanne features a bold frontal design dominated by the traditional Bentley matrix grille and highly prominent, classic round inner headlamps with chrome surrounds, flanked by two, smaller outboard lamp clusters, all featuring the latest in lighting technology. The iconic ‘Flying B’ retractable radiator mascot is available as an option.

The long bonnet, short front overhang and long rear overhang help to convey a sense of power and movement, reinforced by muscular haunches and sharply sculptured lines which flow gracefully from the front wings to the rear. Uniquely designed 20-inch wheels (and optional 21-inch) reinforce the Mulsanne’s powerful, sporting stance.

The body is produced in a new manufacturing facility at Bentley’s headquarters in Crewe where traditional metalworking skills, developed over six decades, are still used extensively during the nine-week build process. It is the very opposite of volume-production car-building… but the very epitome of Bentley.

The rear screen, for example is fully enveloped by the coachwork. This provides a flowing, flawless line to the rear of the car, complementing the exquisitely formed D-pillars ““ whose complex curves can only be created by skilled coach-builders. All spot welds are performed by hand during the Mulsanne’s construction and all panel joints are hand-brazed. These further enhance that ‘hewn from solid’ appearance and result in an extremely stiff body.

The complex form of the aluminium front wings, impossible to achieve with normal pressing techniques, is created using superforming, a technology usually reserved for the aerospace industry. This also makes the wings both lighter, stiffer and provides superb surface definition. Other lightweight materials, such as the composite bootlid, are used to remove mass wherever possible without compromising quality. New construction techniques meant the designers could also incorporate details such as the ‘floating’ elliptical LED tail lights, which uniquely echo the shape of the exhaust tailpipes.

To accentuate the beauty of the bodywork, the Mulsanne features ‘brightware’ exclusively in polished stainless steel, including sill treadplates and matrix grilles. Bentley is the only manufacturer in the world to do this. The stainless steel door handles also incorporate the traditional Bentley ‘knurling’ to their inboard surface for enhanced grip, reflecting the company’s typical attention to detail. The sporting character of the Mulsanne is reinforced by front wing vents, large diameter tailpipe finishers and a choice of 20-inch or 21-inch wheels.

Bentley customers have a world of infinite choice when commissioning their cars. There are 114 paint colours in the range that include everything from unusual heritage colours, special satin and pearlescent finishes and duo-tone combinations.

But the choice does not end there. Through the bespoke world of Bentley Mulliner, unique colours can exactly match a customer’s vision and taste.
