Renault DeZir 2010

Auto Car | Renault DeZir 2010 | Renault DeZir is the first project to be led by Laurens van den Acker and exemplifies the brand’s new philosophy with regard to design. It also marks the implementation of the strategy based on the notion of ‘life cycle’. The first step involves falling in love, an experience that is perfectly illustrated by Renault DeZir’s powerful, sensuous styling and bright red finish; red being the colour associated with passion.

“Renault DeZir is a statement of our new formal design language which conveys notions such as movement, sensuality and emotion through ideal proportions, in much the same way as an object whose forms have been honed by nature. The result is a warm, stimulating design that says ‘Renault’,” explains Axel Breun, Renault’s Director of Concept Car and Show Car Design. Fluidity was an overriding theme from the initial preliminary sketches, and was expressed by a blend of simple forms and generous volumes. “My early source of inspiration stemmed from the liquid sensation, wave-like movement and contrasts in light associated with certain rippled surfaces,” observes Yann Jarsalle, who was in charge of Renault DeZir’s exterior styling. “By directly laying out volumes and not just joining together a number of surfaces by lines, I felt more in tune with the world of sculpture than with that of architecture.”

The result is a two-seater coupé which is both sculptural in spirit yet perfectly harmonious.

Renault DeZir’s shape features prominent wheel arches that accommodate 21-inch wheels, the design of which took its inspiration from the notion of movement.

Meanwhile, the sides feature a combination of flush and recessed forms that play on contrasting light patterns.

The ‘Z’ in the name Renault DeZir is a direct reference to Renault’s Z.E. signature, and several features of its design are suggestive of two qualities readily associated with electric mobility, namely advanced technology and light weight. Indeed, the recessed, linear styling of the front air intake and the entire rear-end convey an impression of lightness in addition to efficiently channelling battery-cooling air from the front to the rear.

To provide rhythm and balance to the overall package, this smooth, fluid skin contrasts with the ripple effect seen on the aluminium side panels, roof and headlight ‘eyelids’. The design of these features alludes to the ripples which can form when a breeze blows over water, while the geometric pattern adds an unmistakable high-tech feel.

The prevailing bright red colour of the body interacts with the graphical forms of the cross-drilled aluminium side panels which equally exude a sense of light weight and technology.

The geometric forms of the glazed areas also contribute to Renault DeZir’s easy-to-read overall design and are reminiscent of a fighter-plane cockpit or certain endurance racing prototypes. The absence of a rear window is overcome by the fitment of two rear-facing cameras which provide the driver with a panoramic view of what is happening behind the car.

The creative thinking behind the design of the front end was aimed at recalling Renault’s styling heritage, while at the same time paving the way for the design trends of the brand’s forthcoming models.

Renault DeZir’s front end features a full-width air-intake which strikes out either side of a large, verticallypositioned Renault logo that proudly displays the car’s brand pedigree. Meanwhile, the chrome finish of the lozenge contrasts with the dark aspect of the grille to express the statement still further. The air scoops situated at the outer extremities of the front air intake are a legacy of Renault’s formal styling language and form an integral part of the air intake’s design, as do the headlights which sit above these scoops.

The front-end design previews the new front-end identity that is poised to become a feature of all Renault models in the future.

The headlights take the form of backlit prisms, which make them a highly graphic feature. The perforated ‘eyelids’ add to this high-tech feel and contribute to Renault DeZir’s specific lighting signature. Rear lighting is provided by an illuminated, seemingly floating strip that extends across the full width of the car. The Renault logo is highlighted by backlighting through the fins of the grille and consequently appears to hover in the middle of this space.

The gull-wing doors are another feature that embody automotive passion and reveal a refined interior, while the fact that the left- and right-hand doors open in opposite directions symbolizes a yin and yang-style amorous harmony.

The interior design also suggests lightness. “Love is a sentiment that lifts you; gives you wings,” says Stéphane Maïore, who was in charge of Renault DeZir’s interior styling. “Inside DeZir, you feel like you’re floating on a cloud,” adds Stéphanie Petit, Colours and Materials Designer. The forms are soft and light, while the predominant colour is white, although there are also echoes of the same passion red used for the exterior. The materials employed for the interior, like the senses they awaken, are precious, with white leather upholstery and trimming for the seats, dashboard and floor, along with a red lacquered finish for the console and accessories.

The one-piece, two-seater front benchseat provides cocoon-like comfort. To emphasise the sensation of a shared passion and lightness, it comprises a number of interlocking elements trimmed in white leather, with a quilted pattern on the passenger’s side, and a contrasting uniform finish on the driver’s side, as if to suggest an inexorable attraction between the two. The embroidered pattern on the leather is based on a graphical representation of the Renault logo and is an example of refined of couture a la française. This technique also provides an indication of the coming trend for future production models.

Renault DeZir is powered by an electric motor mounted in a mid-rear position to optimize weight distribution over the front and rear wheels. The vertically-mounted 24kW/h lithium-ion battery is located behind the benchseat and provides the car with a range of 160km. Battery cooling is ensured not only by the air channelled from the front to the back of the car, but also – and above all – by the flow of air that enters through the lateral scoops concealed behind the aluminium panels on either side of the body. The basic motor is the same as the unit used for Renault’s production electric cars, although an evolution has enabled its power and torque to be uprated to 110kW (150ch) and 226Nm respectively.

1960 Renault 4 CV

Auto Car | 1960 Renault 4 CV | The Renault 4CV is a small French car built between 1946 and 1961. Intended by its creators to be a “people’s car”, it was inspired by the original Volkswagen Beetle and was the first French car to sell over 1 million units. Conceived during German occupation, the design team envisioned something suitable for the economically difficult years expected to follow the war. The 4CV was first shown to the public at the 1946 Paris Motor Show and by 1949 was the most popular car in France. It was powered by a rear mounted, water-cooled 760cc inline 4 cylinder engine. The completion of this same kit by my late friend Ted Holowchuk, a true master modeler as well as teacher, was an inspiration for me on this project. Prior to his passing, Ted and I had talked on and off about both building the same ‘simple’ car kit and the example he built was a ‘donation’ from me.

This kit is from Heller’s fairly broad range of 1:43 scale European cars originally introduced during the later 1970s. Some, including the 4CV, are still irregularly available today and it is one of the better offerings from the range. At one time these kits were quite common and extremely cheap, but now some of the harder to find issues like the Alfa Romeo Alfasud, Peugeot 604, and Citroën DS can be difficult to find and costly to purchase. All 25 parts were molded in a grayish tan plastic that was easy to work with. Except for reworking some parts and adding a number of small details, I built the kit more or less out of the box.

The moldings are crisp and accurate with good detail throughout. The head and taillights are a prime example as though very small, they have accurate scale fidelity + are molded in clear plastic versus being chrome plated like I’ve seen on other small car kits. Everything fitted pretty well and the way the parts where originally designed allows detailing to be easily done. In spite of this, there are two areas that need improvement; the wheels and the windshield.

The chassis is simplified but reflects the actual car well and the interior floor is molded integral with the chassis. Other parts included in the box are a pair of separate front bucket seats, a rear bench seat and package shelf, a combination dash/fire wall, a steering wheel and column, four individual clear windows, a floor shifter, chrome plated bumpers, hubcaps and headlight ‘buckets’. My kit also had a small decal with a pair of unusable “Renault” license plates. The inside of the body shell and dash have basic detail, which I enhanced a bit during assembly.

The kit wheels are very simple, made up of two halves with molded-on tires and the aforementioned separate small hubcaps. The issue that I had with the wheels is because the differentiation between the rim and tire are very subtle and must be scribed or otherwise enhanced to look right. The instructions on my late 1970’s issue used a single exploded view drawing. There isn’t a lot of published material on the car, at least in English, and the box art was quite accurate, so I used it as a detailing reference. The Internet also came in handy for amassing a small photographic reference file.

2004 Renault Wind Concept

Auto Car | 2004 Renault Wind Concept | Renault will unveil its new concept car Wind at the 2004 Geneva Motor Show in March. This two plus one roadster with a streamlined design and lively performance combines both flowing and structured lines. The interior is elegant in accordance with a 'Touch Design' concept, boasting a cabin that seems to be cloaked in leather. The controls put the emphasis on ergonomics and simplicity.

The Wind roadster is fitted with a 136bhp 2.0 16V petrol engine producing 191Nm of torque. The compact dimensions contribute to the lightweight of the vehicle at 850 kgs, which in turn provides nimble handling and dynamic performance. 0-62mph takes 8.5 seconds.

Styling

Wind's profile gives an impression of simplicity and consistency. It is made up of two defining lines. The first runs along the side of the car, curving into the front and rear wings and sweeping round the wheel arches. The second line, even more apparent, envelops the cabin and underscores the impression of protectiveness.

The powerful headlamps also contribute to Wind's appeal. They extend along the bonnet, highlighting the car's dynamism with a streamlined, elongated shape and take their inspiration from previous concept cars like Vel Satis and Talisman. Despite their simple looks, the headlamps conceal complex technology. A powerful jet of blue-tinted light flows through a long transparent tube stretching across vertical glass covers.

The almond-shaped rear lamps continue the body silhouette with their sharp edge. Two powerful LEDs light up parallel glass covers, creating striking beams of light to the sides and rear.

The arc of the panoramic windscreen extends around the sides of the car with a curve that incorporates the side windows. The cabin can be covered with a triple thickness fabric roof including a rounded rear glass window that continues the oval theme.

Interior

The cabin is moulded around the driver and passengers. A large sheet of Sienna-coloured leather forms an enveloping cocoon. The pleated leather seats, Tobacco in colour, are elegant and comfortable. They are fixed, in tune with the roadster spirit, while the steering wheel and pedal assemblies are adjustable and fold away automatically when the door is opened for easier access. Two folding leather-covered rollhoops form an extension of the rigid structure to which they are fitted.

Wind is a 2+1 roadster. The central section linking the backs of the two front seats is made of carbon fibre covered in foam and leather. It can be unhooked and turned inside out, forming a saddle shape that provides a third seat in the rear of the car. Despite its compact size (3.87 metres long and only 10cm longer than a Clio), Wind is extremely roomy. The boot, lined with embossed leather, offers reasonable luggage space (232 litres).

All the vehicle's controls feature an anodised aluminium finish for a muted look. In accordance with the 'Touch Design' concept developed by Renault over the past three years, they put the emphasis on ergonomics, simplicity and clarity. A circular, centrally mounted control panel provides access to each set of functions for communications, music, navigation and services by means of a button in the middle of the circle. Data is displayed on a screen at the top of the dashboard.

The gearbox mode selector is also in the centre of the dashboard. Gear shifting takes place using paddles on the steering wheel through a Quickshift 6 speed manual gearbox with automatic clutch.

The design of the speedometer-cum-rev. counter dial is both simple and sophisticated. With an anodised aluminium surround, it is cut into a glass cylinder. Data is displayed in both analogue (a needle indicating speed) and digital form. Patches of blue followed by red move around the cylinder as the engine speed increases.

In the driver's door of the vehicle, a push-button cylinder incorporating the air conditioning controls swings out to display the temperature in the cabin.

1964-1970 Renault R8 Gordini

Auto Car | 1964-1970 Renault R8 Gordini | The famous “Gorde” was a symbol of French success that thrilled several generations of motorists who were thirsty for sporty sensations at the wheel of a fun car. will be launched a few months later.

Amédée Gordini, who developed almost 200,000 Renault vehicles over a 20-year period, achieved
some of the brand’s greatest sporting achievements.

Born in 1899, just about one year after the launch of the very first Renault vehicle, Amédée Gordini
demonstrated his mechanical skills from a very young age. After working as a mechanic on singleseaters, his R8 Gordinis finished 1st, 3rd, 4th and 5th in the 1964 Tour of Corsica rally. In 1966, the 1300 version heralded the birth of the Gordini Cup. The R8 Gordini delighted lovers of fun driving for a whole decade.

It even featured in French films alongside famous stars, including Romy Schneider, Alain Delon and Lino Ventura, and this small sports sedan was a big hit with the younger generation of drivers. The trend had been set. Gordini became a symbol of success for a whole generation and came to embody a state of mind. The spirit of a triumphant France that shared its successes with everyone.

With its elegant finish and strong design codes, the Gordini label builds on the renowned expertise of Renault Sport, and offers a fresh interpretation of its values.

1992 Renault Reinastella

Auto Car | 1992 Renault Reinastella | Created back in 1992 by the imaginative Renault design team based in Paris, Reinastella was first unveiled to the public on 2nd April that year on the Champs-Elysees at the permanent Renault exhibition showroom.

Originally, Renault decided not to display Reinastella on 1st April in case Parisians judged the concept to be an "Avril Poisson" - the French term for April Fool!

Reinastella was designed with the intention of showing how personal transport might appear in the year 2038 and was physically created following Renault's decision to become involved with the world-famous Euro Disney theme park.

The concept formed an important part of the attraction's Visonarium 360 degree cinema trip through the centuries and at Goodwood this year, the astounding 12-year-old concept will undoubtedly turn heads once more and prove to be one of the most major talking points of the entire three-day festival.

While Reinastella will be the centre-piece of a space-scape built to house the "Future Cars" display in the Cartier Style et Luxe area, the event will also feature separate displays of the Renaultsport brand of roadcars - including the Clio 182, Clio V6 255 and Megane 225 - a current R24 Formula One car and also a celebration of the 20th anniversary of the much-loved MPV Renault Espace.

2004 Renault Fluence Concept

Auto Car | 2004 Renault Fluence Concept | Fluence, Renault's latest concept car, is an upmarket, four-seater sports coupe. Its flowing bodywork and interior embrace the simplicity and sensuality of the car's form. Patrick le Quement, Senior Vice President Corporate Design, sees Fluence as ''the continuation of a long tradition of outstanding French coachbuilders.'' The concept car will be shown at the Louis Vuitton Classic in England on June 4, 2004.

Fluence is a 4.60-metre long coupe whose voluptuous forms are sculpted from simple, structured lines. It is a modern expression of the coupe.

A pleasure of movement is suggested by the visually dynamic contrast of a sloping front and a vertical rear. The frontal design is streamlined: the radiator grille is absent to focus attention on the lozenge logo and to evoke other prestigious Renault cars. Narrow indicators juxtapose the headlamps, whose shape reinforces the purity and fluidity that characterize Fluence's frontal styling. A double strip of LEDs set at different angles is housed behind two transparent curved glass lenses. The diodes illuminate as the steering angle changes to provide multi-directional lighting when cornering. Two air intakes extend and accentuate the headlamps' form, bridged by a third narrow, horizontal inlet.

In contrast with the flowing frontal treatment, the vertical profile of Fluence's rear conveys a strong sense of energy. This impression of energy is underpinned by the contrast between wide wings, highlighted by the elongated, horizontal lights, and a taller central section in a different colour. This section connects the rear window with a twin centre exhaust outlet, framed by an air extractor.

In between its very different front and rear, Fluence is structured around a horizontal plane. Lines of force emerge at the front to converge at the centre of the tailgate. Two run almost symmetrically the length of each side. Two others outline the bonnet, then the roof and the rear window. This V-shaped rear window connects seamlessly to the windscreen by two strips of glass that stretch the length of the roof before dropping down towards the tailgate. The base of the body shell, with its aluminium finish, encircles the body to help reduce drag, a function also performed by the rims.

Fluence's interior is simple and easily to remember, having natural harmony. Light pours in through the glazed area to bring out the full intensity of the prevailing Rouge Margaux red.

The leather dashboard is again predominately red with beige accents. Its ethereal design resembles a leaf that has been rolled then nipped at its centre. This leaf theme is repeated in the design of the centre console. In a spiral movement it embraces the intuitive Touch Design controls. Using a joystick, the driver selects the car's main functions which are shown on a fold-away screen in the upper part of the dashboard. Instruments use both digital and analogue display against a black and Rouge Margaux background.

Special attention has been paid to comfort in the back, beginning with the welcoming and enveloping rear seat. Renault's designers looked to home furnishings as inspiration for the reading lamps. These fit flush with the headlining and, when required, are released by pulling a leather tab then tilted to the ideal angle.

The boot, lined in Rouge Margaux leather, provides great capacity with two side storage units. It is accessed via the tailgate by means of an innovative opening mechanism: the tailgate slides over the roof thanks to an articulated arm in its centre. This does away with side openings that obstruct access to the boot.

2005 Renault Egeus

Auto Car | 2005 Renault Egeus | In 9 of September 2005 at the Frankfurt Motor Show, Renault was presenting the new Egeus concept car which is a 4WD Sport Utility Vehicle.
The car show power and agility because has 250hp 3.0-litre V6 diesel engine combined with a fully automatic 4WD 4WD transmission that regulates traction on the four wheels from 0 to 100% according to grip. This, combined with a seven-speed flick-shift automatic transmission, ensures a high level of driving comfort while substantially reducing fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.

The Egeus has a streamlined shape much like a modern coupe. The front end is deliberately unornamented. By incorporating the air inlets under the headlamps, Renault designers have no need for a grille which they say is “too brash for such a pure design”.

The cabin is warm and welcoming thanks to the glazed roof and a central strip with two transparent sections. Inside, four independent seats are surrounded by a subtle blend of colors and each feature pixelated image of a setting sun.
As an example of Renualts forward thinking, the side door handles are flush-fitting and each has an optical sensor to detects an approaching. Once close, the handle is pushed out a few centimeters, making it easy to grasp.

At the top of the dashboard, a centrally positioned interactive screen relays information to passengers, in particular a detailed trajectory map.
The intuitive controls are true to the principles of Touch Design. The central rotary speed selector benefits from simple ergonomic styling. The ideally-located multimedia control lever makes for easy handling while the steering wheel-mounted controls mirror the natural curve of the hand.

With Renault’s lineup primarily comprised of passenger cars, space vans, and commercial-type vehicles such as the Kangoo, there is plenty of space to slot in a crossover or small SUV, and this handsome Egeus concept marks Renault’s most recent exploration of that theme. The design is a careful and subtle evolution of current Renault design; for example, although the rear profile is steeply raked–like that of a coupe–Renault’s characteristic upright rear glass is respected with a vertical line extending upwards from the forward edge of the taillight, and the shoulders formed on either side of the rear window draw their inspiration from the rear quarter-panels of the Clio and Mgane hatchbacks. The heads-on and rear views are visually interesting, but the front vaguely resembles recent production Volkswagens and the rear end looks positively Volvo-esque. Even the profile seems swiped from the Infiniti FX35/45, a corporate sibling.

The rear hatch features a split-level opening, with the top swinging skyward and the bottom–in an idea lifted from the Toyota FT-SX concept from this year’s Detroit auto show–is a motorized tray that slides out to make loading cargo easier. Unlike the Toyota, however, the tray is also motorized for height-adjustment, so as to separate cargo above and below should the need arise. Other clever touches include flush-fitting door handles that extend when a hand nears and seats that pivot and lower upon opening a door. Further details, though, such as the huge 22-inch wheels (de rigueur for any concept car) and the suicide rear doors, continue to fill us with the feeling that we’ve seen it all before.

The Egeus gets its motivation from a 250-hp, 3.0-liter V-6 diesel engine mated to a seven-speed automatic transmission. A fully automatic four-wheel-drive system allows the Egeus to traverse multiple terrains–were it not an obscenely expensive, hands-off, don’t-even-breath-on-it show car. That system could see some rough-and-tumble action soon, however: the Egeus is rumored to become reality sometime in 2007. But don’t hold your breath for the Egeus–or any Renault–in the U.S. anytime soon.

2006 Renault Altica

Auto Car | 2006 Renault Altica | Renault has a tradition of creating vehicles that challenge the status-quo in the motoring world, and it's new concept car, the Altica, continues this tradition.

The new concept vehicle, due to be officially unveiled at the '06 Geneva Motor Show, was created for two reasons - the first being to showcase new technologies, such as a powerful but compact diesel engine, polycarbonate headlamp modules and an innovate air jet system that reduces drag at high speeds.

Secondly, and like most concept cars, the Altica is an extension of Renault's design philosophy, which will influence the look of future production models. For example, the next generation Laguna wagon/estate may incorporate the Altica's radical-looking rear end and LED headlights.

"Altica strikes a successful balance between flowing and sporty lines. This car is an original and futuristic vision of the sporty estate car, while its graphic identity is both bold and innovative," said Patrick le Quément, Renault's senior vice president of corporate design.

Renault says that the Altica is a sporty new vision of the estate (a.k.a station wagon), combining the practicality of the latter, the sports appeal of a coupé and a high standard of travelling comfort.

From a design point of view, the Altica is an effectively  bold creation, featuring large 21-inch alloy wheels plus a panoramic windscreen and rear window, which underline the car's fluid aerodynamics. It's overall stance (low-slung lines, long bonnet, prominent wheel arches) and general proportions lean more towards the dynamics of a sports car than a traditional estate, giving the vehicle an original profile.

Another styling feature that sets the Altica apart from most estate vehicles are its scissor doors, activated when the driver nears the vehicle via optical sensors.

Though such doors rarely make it to production, The vertically hinging doors also ensure easy access to the low-slung vehicle. Once inside the conceptual vehicle, four individual fixed position seats provide ample shoulder room for all occupants. As the seats are fixed, the driver can adjust the 'drive station' and pedal assembly thanks to a motorised mechanism, while a height-adjustable centre armrest deploys automatically as the driver sits down.

Renault insists that the transparent roof and panoramic windscreen erase the boundary between the interior and the outside world (while also ensuring a brightly-lit cabin), while the layout and angling of the window panes ensure good three-quarter rear visibility for the driver.

With its futuristic design and hi-tech features, the Altica still manages to incorporate a number of clever storage spaces, including the shell-like glove box, concertina-style storage compartment in the armrests and a tray situated underneath the floor at the rear.

The Altica concept is also the first Renault vehicle to incorporate an innovative drag-reducing system, called the Active Synthetic Jet system. Positioned at the rear edge of the roof, Renault claims that the system reduces drag by 15% at speeds of over 129km/h (80mph), which would reduce fuel consumption.

The system - which is now a is a registered Renault patent and expected to reach production vehicles this decade - works by improving the vehicle's aerodynamics via a discreet 2mm wide slit located at the rear extremity of the roof, at the point where the vehicle and the passing air flow separate. This thin slit generates jets of air which are alternately blown and sucked through the tiny cavity, which Renault says actively controls the separation of the air flow according to the vehicle's speed, therefore reducing drag.

As with most concept vehicles these days, the new Renault features hardcore LED headlights that are said to reduce energy consumption and increase low-light visibility. Thepolycarbonate headlamp modules  feature four different modes – daytime running lights (DRL), sidelights, dipped beam and main beam – and function using rows of diodes. Developed in conjunction with French LED lighting giant, Valeo, the LED lighting systems can adapt to changing conditions as well.

Renault has developed a new 132kW (177hp) 2.0-litre diesel engine takes the car from a standing start to 100km/h in just 7.5 seconds. Together with a 6-speed gearbox, Renault explains that its new powerplant – which boasts maximum torque of 380Nm – provides excellent pull-away and mid-range acceleration. And this hasn't been achieved to the detriment of fuel consumption either.

The Renault-Nissan Alliance engine is very inexpensive to run and fuel consumption is equivalent to 140g of CO2 per kilometre and in terms of both performance and driving pleasure, it stands out as the best diesel engine in its class. The front-wheel drive concept car showcases a number of interesting ideas, most notably the Active Synthetic Jet system, and also  gives Renault fans a hint of what's to come from the creative minds of the powerful French automaker.
