Auto Car | 2010 Fisker Karma hybrid | Car designer and coachbuilder Henrik Fisker partnered with Quantum Technologies in 2007 to design and build the Karma. Think of it as the same range-extending technology as a Chevy Volt with twice the horsepower. What makes Fisker special are his production methods. He keeps a small crew of engineers and outsources nearly every aspect of the car to various suppliers. The result is lightning-fast development at a fraction of the cost of larger manufacturers.
The car will be able to reach the top speed of 125mph and 0-60 in only 5.8 seconds, which is an unbelievable performance for a hybrid. You will be able to drive around 50 miles on your batteries and when you run out you will have to use the 2.0 L engine which develops 260 horse power. It will also recharge the batteries while you’re driving. Nobody knows where will the car be produced, but it will surely use a GM engine.
Fisker Karma
Price: starts at $80,000
Range: 50 miles on electric
Top Speed: 125 mph
Fuel: Plug-in hybrid
The Karma won’t be available until mid-2009, at which time 15,000 cars are expected to be produced per year. If you’ve got money to burn and aren’t on Tesla’s long waiting list, it might be worth the wait. Henrik Fisker is a highly regarded designer whose previous work includes the BMW Z8 and the Aston Martin DB9 & V8 Vantage: call him James Bond’s personal car designer. With the Karma he’s achieved a sort of hard-topped cross between the Z8 and his Aston Martins that will certainly stand out on the road for its grace: a car in which a modern, green 007 would look smashing.
