Maserati GranCabrio

Auto Car | Maserati GranCabrio | The open-top GranCabrio is pure Maserati. It is a Maserati in the truest sense, with an unmistakable Pininfarina design, spacious interior, handcrafted details, driving pleasure and high performances. The Maserati GranCabrio touches all five senses in an open-air experience that retains all the typical comfort and performance brio. Like all Maserati”s open-top models, the GranCabrio is a special car intended for true connoisseurs.

The GranCabrio continues in the footsteps of the Maserati tradition in open-top models, and adds to a line-up of models that has made the history of the Modena manufacturer, such as the 1950 A6G Frua Spyder, the 3500GT Vignale Spyder (1960), the Mistral Spyder (1964), the Ghibli Spyder (1968) and the 2001 Spyder, the car Maserati chose for his comeback to the United States.

True to its tradition, the Maserati GranCabrio yet opens a new chapter, because never before have four-seater top-down models been produced at the Viale Ciro Menotti Maserati factory in Modena. There are four proper seats are provided, so that the rear passengers are not merely supporting actors, but co-stars of the journey.
The Maserati GranCabrio is powered by a 4.7 liter V8 engine paired with the fluid 6-speed automatic transmission. In Sport mode, the V8 gives the driver and passengers the full power of its 323kW, with a thrilling roar that becomes even more exciting with the top down, as it becomes one with its surroundings.

The body of the Maserati GranCabrio has been thoroughly overhauled. Despite the lack of an overhead frame and a wheelbase at the top of its class (2.942mm: longer than its direct competitors) it guarantees the best possible performance in terms of structural rigidity. This enhances the smooth handling, safety and comfort of the car, and fully exploits the powerful, efficient mechanics.
The newly-designed bearing monocoque has been made using materials and technologies designed especially to optimize weight: the bonnet and cross beams are made from aluminum, while the boot is made from SMC (Sheet Molding Compound).

The excellent weight distribution (with higher load at the rear) also facilitates excellent on-the-road dynamics and improved safety, in combination with the vehicle”s control systems. These include, for the first time ever, the Hydraulic Brake Assist (HBA), which optimizes brake performance both in frequent use and in emergency situations.
The new body took thousands of hours of calculations, testing and development. The result of all this work is a static rigidity at the top of its class (75000 DaN/m/rad) and dynamic torsional frequency of 27.2 Hz.
Particular attention has been paid to developing the aerodynamics, with the creation of a flat aluminum base that not only adds to the overall body”s rigidity but also reduces Cx by 6 points. In this way, for the first time, the convertible version of a car is able to maintain the same aerodynamic performance of the coupé, with a Cx of 0.35.

Maserati Quattroporte Sport GTS Awards Edition

Auto Car | Maserati Quattroporte Sport GTS Awards Edition | The Quattroporte Sport GT S “Awards Edition”, the latest jewel in the Maserati range, makes its official debut at the prestigious Geneva Auto Show.
Six years after its birth, the car that created the luxury sport sedan segment continues to receive accolades from the general public, automobile enthusiasts and the press. Maserati has decided to celebrate its success with a superlative version, blending the elegance and sporty stylishness of the brand’s flagship, thanks to the combination of highly refined details, handcrafted finishes and features with a decidedly sporty flair.

During its six years of life, the Maserati Quattroporte has received no less than fifty six awards from the most prestigious automotive and lifestyle publications in fourteen countries over in four continents: a global approval for a car that has known how to recreate itself over the years, never failing to maintain the appeal of the lines and purity of the forms created by the hand of Pininfarina, which defined it an instant classic.

The new Quarzo fuso finishing – a pearlescent metallic grey with golden nuanced colour - exclusive to this model, makes the exterior immediately recognizable, and highlights the body’s elegant lines. The burnished treatment used on the exterior chrome parts, as well as on the side air vents and radiator surround, also blends with the 20’’ Multi Trident dark grey rims with satin finish.

The brake system, which replicates the system fitted to the Quattroporte Sport GT S and uses dual-cast technology, is further enhanced by the hand-polished calipers both at the front and rear. With the Quattroporte Sport GT S “Awards Edition”, Maserati and Brembo are introducing on the market for the first time polished calipers, treated with precision mechanical processes and featuring a hand finish which gives them their special mirror-like appearance and enhances their sporty credentials at the same time.

The interior also bears witness to the combination of sporting flair and craftsmanship that has always characterized the Maserati flagship sedan. The Poltrona Frau leather of the seats is combined with perforated Alcantara with a new undulated pattern, and the headlining still in Alcantara. Completing the interior space are the special brushed aluminum door sills and Piano Black satin-finish wood moldings.

The boot with a full black trim has been embellished further with chrome details and a leather side pocket. The attention to details has even been extended to the mats, which are made of even richer and softer material.
A special exterior “Awards Edition” series plate completes the car’s look and makes an already unique car even more unmistakable.
The Quattroporte Sport GT S “Awards Edition” will be available in the latter half of 2010 as model year 2011.

Sub-Quattroporte Sedan - Maserati Midsize Sport Luxury Sedan For 2014

Auto Car | Sub-Quattroporte Sedan - Maserati Midsize Sport Luxury Sedan For 2014 | New High End Vehicles from Maserati is set to build a midsize sport luxury sedan to rival the likes of the BMW 5 Series/M5, Mercedes CLS/AMG, Jaguar XF/XFR, and Cadillac CTS/CTS-v. The car is smaller than the Quattroporte, which will continue. It will go on market about 2014, probably as a '15 model in the U.S. Although it's in the product plan, there's no frozen design (one possible look is depicted in the illustration), and running prototypes would be years away. Maserati wants to become a "relevant player" within its chosen luxury segments. Adding the new model would allow it to strengthen dealer coverage and brand visibility. The all-new car is part of Maserati's 2010-'14 business plan, which Fiat Group CEO Sergio Marchionne recently revealed to investors.

First Test: 2009 Maserati GranTurismo S

Auto Car | First Test: 2009 Maserati GranTurismo S | Sure the race and test tracks can divulge much about a car -- where else can you safely push the limits in a controlled environment? -- but the daily drive home can often reveal just as much valuable information. Take the 39-mile commute from Motor Trend's L.A. office to my home near the southern tip of Ventura. It consists of three miles of stop-and-go motoring on urban surface streets, seven of 70-mph cruising along Interstate 10, another nine clicks of 50-mph sailing on the scenic and gently sweeping Pacific Coast Highway, and finally 20 miles of grip-defying, brake-scorching hustling over two-lane that tightly twists and undulates through the mountains in Malibu.

In the past month, I've hit the car lotto, piloting home such stout performance machines as the BMW M3 DCT, Mitsubishi Evo MR, Nissan GT-R, and, most recently, Maserati's new 433-horsepower blink-of-an-eye-shifting GranTurismo S. Along the illuminating route to my humble abode, the M3 elicited the most thrills, the Evo the most giggles, and the GT-R the most awestruck sighs. The Maser GTS? The most satisfaction -- it's not even close.

How is that possible, you ask. After all, the 12.7-second M3 handily beat the Mercedes C63 and Lexus IS F in a rigorous comparison test; the 0.99g Evo, with its active yaw control, corners like a go-kart; and the GT-R, well, it pulls over 1.00 g and catapults to 60 in just 3.2 seconds.

Plainly put, the GranTurismo S possesses intangibles the others can't begin to grasp. Like a Ferrari-built wet-sump 4.7-liter V-8 whose wail under wide-open throttle fills the Alcantara-trimmed cabin as if Pavarotti were in the back seat belting "Turandot" and swigging grappa. Or how a four-seat coupe the relative size of a BMW M6 claws a curve and bites a hairpin with the grip and grace of the smaller, more svelte M3. And whether it's drool or disgust over Pininfarina's penmanship, there's no dismissing the fact that the Maserati's curvaceous and chiseled body draped over S-specific 20-inch alloys draws stares the others simply can't mirror. Satisfaction? The GranTurismo S practically guarantees it.
