Auto Car | 2011 BMW Alpina B7 xDrive: 2010 New York Auto Show | In February, at the Chicago Auto Show, we saw the latest from Alpina -- the new B7 sedan -- to be offered in both short- and long-wheelbase versions. With significant revisions to BMW's standard 4.4-liter twin-turbo V-8 that include new pistons, larger intercoolers, and increased boost pressure, the B7 was said to be good for a well-rounded 500 horsepower and a full 516 pound-feet of torque. Hook that type of power up to the B7's rear wheels and the improvements were good for 4.5-second 0 to 60 mph launches when the sun is shining and roads are dry. So what about when conditions aren't quite so good?
That's where the 2011 BMW Alpina B7 xDrive comes in. With BMW's intelligent all-wheel-drive system, the latest Alpina sticks to the street, even if that street is wet or snowy. As with the standard B7 (if you can call any Alpina 'standard,' that is), both short- and long-wheelbase options will be available. Pricing hasn't yet been announced, but you can expect the standard xDrive premium to be tacked on for the advantage of all-weather capability.
The Alpina B7 xDrive sedan takes the idea of the 2002 tii sports sedan of yore to new heights. And new price levels: expect a sticker of more than $123,000. As with the Alpina that was shown in February in Chicago, this all-wheel-drive variant is propelled by a 500-horsepower version of the 4.4-liter twin-turbocharged V-8 found in the regular BMW 7 Series on which the B7 is based. Peak torque is 516 pound-feet.
Although the BMW Alpina B7 was debuted at this year’s Chicago Auto Show, a second iteration — the B7 xDrive — will also be debuted at the upcoming New York Auto Show. The Alpina B7 starts at $122,875 for the standard wheelbase model and $126,775 for the extended wheelbase model. Pricing details for the Alpina B7 xDrive have yet to be released, but given that the xDrive costs about $3,000, expect it to be that much more expensive than the standard model.
