Auto Car | 2012 Mercedes-Benz CLS Class Continues Four-Door Coupe Design | One of the biggest growths on the automotive market has been in the segment of four-door coupes. It is here that automakers are attempting arched designs to replicate the attractive styling of a coupe but with the
practicality of four doors. The trend, as some of you may know, was started in 2003 when the Mercedes-Benz CLS Class was revealed.
Back then, the innovative design and its arched styling made it a best seller, and rivals immediately rushed to follow its trend. Since 2003, more than 170,000 CLS models were sold all over the world.
As you can imagine, Mercedes had a difficult task ahead when it needed to work on the next generation CLS. We can now see the result of the company's hard work, as the 2012 Mercedes-Benz CLS Class has finally been revealed.
"Customers all over the world benefited from our bold move to launch a completely new vehicle concept onto the market", explains a delighted Dr. Joachim Schmidt, member of the board of Mercedes-Benz Cars, Sales & Marketing. "And with its exciting design, the new edition of the CLS also benefits from the fact that we are a whole generation ahead of the competition with our four-door Coupé."
The new CLS takes its predecessor's arched design one step further, dialing down the rear side while introducing more sharp angles at the front and on the side. Besides the new styling, improved technologies and new features were added to the 2012 CLS Class.
"The new CLS points the way forward for the future perceptible design idiom of Mercedes-Benz", explains Professor Gorden Wagener, head of design at Mercedes-Benz. "At the same time it takes its inspiration from the great tradition of stylish, refined sportiness which has always been a feature of Mercedes coupés."
More specifically, the new CLS takes cues from the already launched CL Class coupe, while combining them with lines from recent concepts like the F800 Style and Shooting Brake. According to the company, you can even find a few marks reminiscent of the SLS AMG supercar in the new model.
