Lexus LF-C Concept 2004

Auto Car | Lexus LF-C Concept 2004 | Lexus introduced its third new concept design within a year when it unveiled the LF-C luxury sports coupe concept car at the New York International Auto Show today. The LF series of concept vehicles is designed to define and launch an entirely new direction in styling for the Lexus brand. The LF-C provides a hint of the direction Lexus is considering for the next generation IS 300 sports car.

"Design is among the most important differentiating factors between any two products and the LF-C expands the current IS 300 sport sedan into a new category previously not addressed in the Lexus lineup," said Lexus Group Vice President and General Manager Denny Clements. "The LF-C concept is designed to target an extremely young, affluent buyer with a strong element of surprise."

The surprise is provided by stylists from the Calty Design Research Center in the form of a 4-position retractable hardtop in the LF-C. The unique hardtop design allows the car to transform itself at the touch of a button from a coupe to a convertible, to a targa or to a speedster, depending on the driver’s mood. The powered top stows neatly into the trunk through a surprisingly minimal rear-deck opening.

A large rear wheel drive platform utilizes a high-output, front-mounted V8 engine with a six-speed sequential automatic transmission as the basis and motivating force for the LF-C. With an expanded wheelbase of 5.1 inches, the LF-C is only slightly longer overall than the current IS 300. Significantly, the LF-C sits about 2.0 inches lower and is nearly five inches wider than the current IS 300. The broad stance and short overhangs strike an aggressive pose with ample dimensions to comfortably accommodate four adult passengers."We used a combination of convex and concave surfaces to control the balance of light and shadow on the car which creates this beautiful contrast of having sharp lines within the sculpted exterior surfaces," said Kevin Hunter, vice president of Calty Design Research, Inc. "The idea was to create a sense of strength and softness at the same time, adding an air of mystery."

Calty used long, integrated lines to simplify the overall form of the LF-C. The distinctive roof rail tapers as it moves forward from the rear, mimicking the sculpted theme of the main body. The extreme tapering of the main body shape from front to rear, which is then wrapped and interlocked by the rear fenders, is designed to show strength and power from every angle. The interior communicates performance with drive-by-wire steering and Formula One inspired shifter and steering wheel with the gauges stacked along the steering column axis, ascending toward the base of the windshield. The gauges are transparent, with needles moving from the ring, rather than the center.A dynamic and flowing center console, in a solid tapered form, runs the length of the interior. Displays and controls are hidden beneath this transparent console surface that is multi-layered, which creates a sophisticated, high-tech look and feel. The console is flanked on each side by arched, wing-like instrument panels situated low in front of the driver and passenger to create a feeling of openness.

Four lightweight individual bucket seats use slender shapes inspired by modern stemware to create a contrast of sport and elegance. The effect provides roominess along with a snug and secure feeling."We’ve known for some time that if Lexus ever prioritized styling the way we have product quality and advanced technology, we would once again change the luxury car playing field," said Clements. "The LF-C is a stunning example of how Lexus will address the future and change it at the same time."

Lexus LF-A Concept 2005

Auto Car | Lexus LF-A Concept 2005 | Lexus LF-A Concept The LF-A concept sports car was first revealed during a press conference at the North American International Auto Show in 2005. The two-seat design brings together sports car performance with the traditional Lexus luxury refinement. The LF-A was designed to signal a new era for Lexus styling, as well as achieving performance superiority against its competitors in terms of reliability, handling, speed and acceleration.

Jim Press, executive vice president and COO of Toyota Motor Sales, explains: “The Lexus LF-A is like no sports car we have ever built or even imagined. Currently only a concept, it is a realistic vision of how we might address the boundaries that define the exotic sports car landscape.”The LF-A’s engine is capable of producing over 500 bhp, with a cubic capacity of less than 5.0 litres. The combination of optimised gearing, aerodynamics and lightweight design result in a maximum speed of around 200 mph.

A new styling direction
On the inside, the LF-A bears the characteristics of a luxury, high-speed cockpit which provides exceptional comfort and precise controls. Despite giving away five inches in length to the Porsche 911 Turbo, the Lexus’ wheelbase carries an extra nine inches over that of its rival. Standing 48 inches tall, it is almost exactly the same size as the Ferrari F430, and its 73.2 inches of width place it between the Mercedes Benz SL55 and the Aston Martin DB9.

Whilst making a major statement about Lexus’ definition of the “exotic sports car” concept, the LF-A also manages to express the dawn of new age for the global styling direction of the Lexus brand.Wahei Hirai, global managing officer of design for Toyota Motor Corporation, explains the significance of the LF-A for the brand’s image: “What has emerged from this two-year journey is not just a new direction in philosophy. It is a new design language, based on the dynamism and inherent contrast between simplicity and elegance."

The LF-A is characterised by simplicity both in form and in function. Both the interior and exterior are elegant and understated, avoiding superfluous exaggeration. The emphasis is on luxury – a luxury which is subtle yet startling. This end is achieved with a look that juxtaposes elegance and simplicity, creating a powerful, dynamic and exciting visual contrast.lexus enthusiasts will notice a significant change in both design and styling in the LF-A concept. Many of the major components have been slimmed down and redefined, and the new approach to size, proportion and presentation has resulted in a super car with near perfect weight balance. The end result of these changes is a high-performance vehicle with outstanding stability and a breathtaking top speed.

Lexus SC Pebble Beach Edition 2005

Auto Car | Lexus SC Pebble Beach Edition 2005 | 2005 Lexus SC 430 Pebble Beach Edition news, pictures, and information
As a Brand Partner and Preferred Vehicle of Pebble Beach Resorts, Lexus is proud to unveil the third annual Pebble Beach Edition of the SC 430 hardtop convertible. This exclusive automobile - only 500 will be available - pays homage to the timeless classics shown at Pebble Beach. The exterior color is a beautiful tigereye mica, and the leather interior is a warm camel with espresso bird's-eye maple wood trim. Special Pebble Beach badging highlights the front fenders, the center console, and the floor mats. Each SC 430 Pebble Beach Edition comes with a complimentary custom-designed two-piece leather luggage set, which matches the vehicle colors. The 2006 Pebble Beach Edition also comes with a new 6-speed transmission and new adaptive front head-lights. Also included are a Mark Levinson nine-speaker, seven-channel, DSP-amplified audio system and a Lexus DVD Navigation system, which acknowledges the advanced technology in the future classic from Lexus.

To commemorate its four-year exclusive partnership with Pebble Beach Company, Lexus introduced its second annual 2005 Lexus SC Pebble Beach Edition retractable hardtop convertible. Únveiled at the 'Lexus Style in the Fast Lane' fashion show on August 13 at the world-famous Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance, this 2005 SC features stunning black and red vintage styling cues from automotive classics. While only 600 are slated for production, its dramatic design and numerous luxury features make the car even more alluring than its exclusivity.

As with any SC, the first thing to notice is its spectacular exterior styling. And that's especially true of this edition, considering the never-before-seen exclusive Black Diamond body color and chrome wheels with graphite accents. The Special Edition has specially-made Pebble Beach badging on the front fender and inside on the floor mats. Also inside, the SC reveals vintage colors while maintaining a modern design, with premium Pimento Red leather-trimmed seating surfaces and black bird's-eye maple trim. Even more unique are the subtle details such as a red and silver engine cover, black headlights and red scuff plate illumination. Additionally, each Lexus SC Pebble Beach Edition comes equipped with a complimentary black Lexus and Pebble Beach Company Tumi® tri-fold garment bag. Únlike most Tumi products, which are made of ballistic nylon, this customized bag is made crafted in full leather.

Of course, one of the most impressive features on the Lexus SC is its ability to hide the roof within the confines of its trunk in a mere 25 seconds, while still maintaining enough room for luggage. All without latches, catches, snaps or covers. And when the top is up, it defies traditional convertible logic by remaining solid, secure and weatherproof-sans flutters, drafts or leaks. Únderneath its beautiful skin, the Lexus SC hosts a 300-horsepower, 4.3-liter V8 engine.

Lexus LF-A Sports Car Concept 2007

Auto Car | Lexus LF-A Sports Car Concept 2007 | The first hints that Lexus might sell an exotic sports car came exactly two years ago here at the Detroit auto show with the unveiling of the first LF-A concept. That car's primary goal was to introduce the "L-finesse" design direction to the world, but public excitement pushed the brand to take their toy to the track. But now, just as Nissan did with the GT-R and as Mitsubishi is also doing here with the Prototype X, Lexus is showing a second concept of the same car.

Is it just another tease? "The first LF-A was pure concept, but one that we went so far as to conduct engineering analysis on," says Lexus general manager Bob Carter. "This latest concept is much closer to a vehicle that we would bring to market, and one in which we will be gauging consumer interest." In other words yes, it is still a tease. And because it might see production, this swoopier LF-A might be an even bigger tease. Thanks a lot, Lexus.

Like the original concept, this LF-A is powered by front mid-mounted V-10 spinning out over 500 horsepower that, along with revised aerodynamics, "makes a top speed of 200 mph not only possible, but probable." A rear-mounted transaxle and rear-mounted radiators improve weight distribution.

While the triple, center-mounted exhaust outlets are beyond cool, the overall styling of the LF-A is too clean and sterile in a purely Lexus manner (although the greenhouse is pure Nissan 350Z.)

While the idea of a supercar created by the most conservative brand in the world excites us somewhere inside, we're mostly afraid. Can Lexus head right into the most insanely powerful, wildly expensive segment of the market and still make a car that leaves us saying, "meh?"

2007 Lexus SC Pebble Beach Edition news, pictures, and information
In celebration of its exclusive partnership with the Pebble Beach Company, Lexus will introduce the fourth annual Lexus SC Pebble Beach Edition retractable hardtop convertible at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance Lexus Fashion Preview on Aug. 18.

Evoking a color combination reminiscent of history's classic convertibles, the 2007 SC Pebble Beach Edition features a cream pearlescent exterior paint called Starfire Pearl, with a passionate Pimento Red leather interior and black birds-eye maple wood trim. With only 400 slated for production, this new Pebble Beach Edition SC will be in limited supply. While sharing the unique styling cues and refined interior trim found in all Lexus models, the new Pebble Beach SC includes special-edition brushed-chrome badging on the front fenders and center console; a Pimento red Pebble Beach logo is embroidered on black carpeted floor mats to complement the interior. The hardtop convertible also features aggressive 18-inch G-Spider alloy wheels, a sleek rear spoiler, and either run-flat summer or run-flat all-season tires.

Since its debut as the first retractable hardtop in the premium luxury §egmènt, one of the SC 430's most notable features has been its ability to stow the roof within the confines of its trunk in a meager 25 seconds, while still maintaining enough room for luggage. This is accomplished without latches, catches, snaps or covers. When the top is up, it defies traditional convertible logic by remaining solid, secure and weatherproof.Beneath its striking exterior, the rear-wheel-drive SC 430 is propelled by a 288-horsepower, DOHC, 4.3-liter V8 engine with Variable Valve Timing with intelligence (VVT-i), while still achieving 19 mpg city/25 mpg highway and ÚLEV II emissions certification. The powerful V8 is mated to a six-speed sequential-shift ECT-i transmission to attain a 0-60 time of 5.8 seconds and an electronically limited top speed of 149 mph.

A number of new features are present on all 2007 SC 430s, including driver and front passenger knee airbags, which complement the standard dual front airbags and front-seat-mounted side airbags. The knee airbags are in addition to a new front-passenger occupant-detection sensor and a fully concealed uniblade front windshield wiper.

Lexus IS-F 2008

Auto Car | Lexus IS-F 2008 | Much of the development of the new IS-F took place at Fuji Speedway and the Higashi-Fuji Technical Center in Japan. The IS-F is based on the proven rear-wheel-drive Lexus IS, which is equipped with a double-wishbone front and multi-link rear suspension. As well as the IS performs, Lexus engineers demanded much more of the all-new IS-F. The result is a performance tuned 5.0-liter V8 engine, topped with specially engineered heads fed by a two-stage intake system, that produces 400-plus horsepower and more than 350 ft.-lbs. of torque. The all-new IS-F is equipped with engine-oil and transmission-fluid coolers for high-speed performance and a cylinder head-scavenging oil pump for high g-force driving.

The IS-F engine is mated to the world's first eight-speed direct sport-shift transmission. A new torque-converter lock-up control was developed that allows for a direct, crisp gear change through the constant lock-up of the torque converter in second through eighth gears. In Drive mode, the IS-F transmission performs with great smoothness, and the torque converter allows for great launch ability for fast standing-start acceleration that will register a zero-to-60 time in less than 4.9 seconds.

This unique transmission also features an advanced Manual mode. A pair of paddles located within a fingertip's reach behind the steering wheel enables the driver to make ultra-fast up-shift gear changes within a tenth of a second. Downshifts are accompanied by automated and incredibly precise throttle blips to match engine RPM to vehicle speed.
The impressive acceleration achieved by the IS-F requires it be equipped with heavy-duty Brembo brakes designed to the specifications of the Lexus engineering team. Huge, 14.2-inch cross-drilled front discs are gripped by rigid, powerful six-piston aluminum calipers, while 13.6-inch rear cross-drilled discs feature two-piston calipers. High-friction brake pads are equipped on all four wheels. The brakes are finished with the Lexus name displayed on the calipers, a first for a Lexus production vehicle.

The IS-F features custom-designed 19-inch forged alloy wheels as standard. The wheels were built to Lexus specifications by BBS and are surrounded by high-performance sport tires. The attention to performance also extends to a modified suspension that lowers the entire car by more than a half-inch when compared to the base IS, and one full inch when compared to IS models equipped with 18-inch wheels. This specially modified suspension allows for an exciting and energetic drive, whether on a race track or the streets.

The IS-F features an all-new three-mode version of Lexus' Vehicle Dynamics Integrated Management (VDIM) system. In addition to the Normal mode, the new VDIM features a Sport mode that allows the driver to push the car even further before its braking-, throttle- and steering-control systems kick in. The third VDIM system mode is Off, which allows the driver to push the IS-F to its ultimate level of handling performance.

The attention to performance is complemented by modified styling cues that differentiate the IS-F from the standard IS. Lexus engineers provided the IS-F with a dual-exhaust system and quad-tail pipes, wider front fenders, and a larger grille and rear spoiler. Both the hood and lower intake were enlarged to accommodate and cool the V8 engine.
Like the exterior, the interior of the IS-F receives unique styling with aluminized composite trim and special surface treatments.

The instrument panel includes an oil-temperature gauge and shift indicator-lights, while the "F" logo is showcased on the steering wheel and rear-center console. In addition to the usual Lexus standards of comfort and convenience, the interior of the IS-F features specially shaped and trimmed seats, which hold the driver comfortably and securely in place. The special sport seats are available in black or a unique high-contrast white and black trim."The intent of creating the IS-F was not to be a competitor to other performance-sport sedans," said Carter. "Rather, the goal was to create a true performance sedan in a uniquely Lexus way-one that is totally authentic with a unique interpretation of raw driving thrill at all speeds and provides a whole new definition of 'usable power.'"

Lexus LF-A Roadster Concept 2008

Auto Car | Lexus LF-A Roadster Concept 2008 | The engineers and designers at Lexus continue to use their groundbreaking LF-A premium sports car concept as a medium for expressing their ideas about what a high-performance sporting vehicle not only can be, but should be. In this latest expression of the LF-A, they have removed the car's top to create a high-performance roadster. The LF-A Roadster is based on the sturdy yet lightweight carbon-fibre and aluminium body used for the LF-A coupe, which helps maintain the structure's strength and rigidity even without a top.

Like its coupe counterpart, the LF-A Roadster is powered by a high-revving V10 engine that approaches 5.0 litres in displacement. The V10, capable of more than 500 horsepower and test-track speeds greater than 200 mph, is mounted in front of the passenger compartment but behind the front-axle centerline in what the LF-A's engineers refer to as a "front-mid" configuration. The engine is connected via a torque tube and propeller shaft to a transaxle that is controlled by paddle shifters. The torque tube is a structural member that adds rigidity to the drivetrain and chassis while also reducing vibration.

Styling is rooted in the Lexus L-Finesse design philosophy, conferring the LF-A Roadster's front end with a compact, low-profile, aerodynamic shape. Like its coupe counterpart, the LF-A Roadster stands just 48 inches tall, but the Roadster configuration adds a speed adaptive rear wing.

The rear is marked by a pair of wrap-around, arrowhead-shaped tail-lights that bracket a pair of large grilles. These grilles vent the heated air from the car's two rear-mounted radiators into the LF-A Roadster's aerodynamic wake. The radiators are fed cool air by two large intake ducts mounted just above the rear wheel wells. This aft radiator positioning not only allowed the designers to keep the car's front profile low and tight but also aided the LF-A's chassis engineers in their search for optimal weight distribution.

Helping to provide balance and scale to the design, which features an overall length of 175.6 inches and a wheelbase of 102.6 inches, are high-performance tyres on turbine-styled alloy wheels. The front tyres are 265/35R20s, while the rears are 305/30R20s. Like the LF-A coupe, the brakes consist of 14.2-inch cross-drilled, vented discs up front, and 13.6-inch cross-drilled, vented discs at the rear. The front brake callipers are six-piston units and the rear callipers use four pistons each.

An "F" logo, located on each front fender of the Roadster, indicates the vehicle's status as a part of the new "F" marque. The name is derived from the original "F" designation for the first Lexus LS prototype. That vehicle was internally coded "Circle-F," with the "F" standing for "flagship." The Circle-F designation further evolved into the code name Flagship One, or F1, and the first F1 concept developed into Lexus' first vehicle, the LS. Since then, the "F" code has come to signify a special vehicle program within Lexus that falls outside the normal engineering and development process. In addition, Fuji Speedway is the IS F's home circuit, and the shape of the F-logo was inspired by many of the track's turns. The all-new Lexus IS F sport sedan is the first production vehicle to carry the F marque.

Lexus LS 600h L 2008

Auto Car | Lexus LS 600h L 2008 | I disagree with every review of the Lexus LS600hL ever written. Categorically. To a man, my colleagues misinterpret the most expensive Lexus as a misguided planet-saver that doesn't deliver enough mpg to justify its sky-high price tag. I view the ultimate hybrid as better driving through science. In fact, despite the dorky "hybrid" badges uglifying the LS600hL's flanks, Lexus didn't build this beast to sip fuel. They built it to go toe-to-toe with 12-cylinder Germans.

The LS600hL is no design statement, like the 760Li. It doesn't announce, "I have a huge wallet" like a Mercedes S600. The LS design is much more Audi A8 W12, only without the goatee. The restrained yet handsome lines strike the same chord as VW's Phaeton. Only this time they're brand correct. The LS600hL is a handsome package. At a distance, the big four-door appears clean and reserved. It's only when you pull up next to (and dwarf) anything else on the road that the long-wheelbase Japanese pseudo limo makes aesthetic sense. In a word: presence. In two: killer headlights.

Inside the LS600hL offers a hilarious split between grasping at straws luxury and techno overkill. You've never seen so many buttons. Lexus engineers loaded a shotgun with 'em and blasted away. The last LS I drove-complete with the mid-level rear-seat overkill option-boasted 166 buttons. This time out, the car was down to about 130 pieces of Camry-quality plastic to press. Still, you'll go crazy. And you'll never even notice the gaudily lacquered wood or hand stitched yet still not that rich leather because your attention will 100 percent focused on the AFS button. Whatever that is. Y08_lexus_ls600h_l_092.jpgou want the truth about this car's mileage? Can you handle the truth? But before we discuss how much gas it sucks, I need to tell you about yet another button…A toggle switch below the gear lever controls the LS600hL's throttle response. In the "Hybrid" setting, the first 10 percent-ish of peddle travel only engages the car's electric motor. "Snow" ups that to an almost undrivable level. Seeing as how this was my second fling with the LS600hL, I knew to stick it in "Sport" (about 3 percent pedal motion) before I pushed the start button. And that was that.

"That" means about 10 mpg around town. Terrible, yes. In both my and the car's defense, the massive, battering-ram acceleration from the 5.0-liter V8 plus the 221 hp electric motor is so addictive that I was forced to bury the pedal every chance I got. But here's the thing — after 300 miles the computer let me know that I had averaged 24.8 mpg. Say what?As you may have guessed, there's a bit of ideal circumstances involved. The first piece of the puzzle is a lot of open road. The next is the radar cruise control, which does perform impressively (slowing the car down to a stop and setting off again in traffic). Forget the radar part. Just set the cruise to 80 mph and watch in sheer amazement as the tachometer registers a paltry 1,100 rpm and the computer claims 40 mpg.

Now for the part you can't handle… Setting the cruise control at 110 mph returns 25 mpg as the engine just crests 2,000 rpm.I briefly mentioned the rocket sled-esque forward thrust but it merits repeating. Holy runaway train, Batman! This 5,219 monster flies like a Bentley. Rumor has it that Lexus can't quite figure out how much torque the car produces. They claim "just" 385 ft-lb of the stuff. However, the IS-F kicks out 371 ft-lb and it's the same (gas) engine. And the electric motor offers up 100 percent of what it's got at any rpm. Based on the seat of my pants, I say they're severely underrating the twist.

In his review, Mr. Montgomery described the following as bad manners; when you lift your foot off the gas, the electric mill provides an extra dollop of shove. I find it reassuring. And fun. You think that sounds dangerous? Perhaps, but Lexus did see fit to (uh) fit the LS600hL with some of the most serious stoppers in the luxo-barge biz.
The world's biggest hybrid weighs more than Oprah in her heavier years, but stretches over 17 feet. Which means the handling is about what you'd imagine. To be fair, the world's most expensive hybrid handles commendably. But you'd never know, as gauze-wrapped steering and active anti-roll bars dial out all sensation. Good or otherwise. Of course, you can't hear either engine, the CVT (literally — no whine), the wind, rocket attacks or anything.

Lexus IS 250C 2009

Auto Car | Lexus IS 250C 2009 | We all saw it coming, each one of Lexus’s competitors has a convertible, and it was only a matter of time before the Japanese marque produced one of its own.Lexus has taken the roof off the Lexus IS250 to produce what it terms as the Lexus IS 250C – surprisingly enough. At first glance, you could mistake the IS 250C for a regular IS 250, it’s only when you see the side and rear profile of this hard-top convertible Lexus that you realise it’s unique.

While it’s difficult to overcome oversized doors in a convertible, the IS 250C’s driver and passenger doors are the first part of a driver’s impression and left a sour taste in my mouth from the get go.Even on level ground, the doors weigh two to three times more than a regular IS 250 door. When you get to an incline they become countless kilo’s heavier as you attempt to open them against gravity.

The reason the doors are so heavy is because of the extra structural components required to maintain the vehicle’s safety regime, considering they must stay intact when the car is both upright and upside down.Heavy doors aside, the interior is a pleasant place to be, all the switchgear is easy to find and the updated satellite navigation system is quicker, while the updated graphics and resolution make it better to look at.If you enjoy long distance driving, brace yourself for regular rest breaks as the seats are extremely firm and very flat.

It feels like you’re sitting on an old couch that has wooden planks fitted underneath the covering. Presumably this is due to the seats needing to be lower to accommodate driver and passenger heads during roof operation. While you will drive uncomfortably to each destination, you can rest assured that you will do so quietly with the fantastic noise suppression. Even on windy highways, it’s hard to tell you’re sitting inside a convertible, which is a commendable effort on Lexus’ part.
Even if noise was an issue, the incredibly powerful 12-speaker Mark Levinson sound system would quell such a problem, because despite having the roof off, everyone will be able to hear you coming. The sound system reproduces bass extremely well and features high clarity tweeters, in addition to a six-disc in-dash CD player which doubles as a DVD player for those lonely nights in.

The rear seats are more a novelty than an operational feature. Even squeezing kids into the rear seats is an ask, making you wonder why Lexus even bothered with them. The roof operates via a switch located next to the driver’s knee. The silent roof operation takes around 20-seconds and uses some 13 motors and 33 sensors to open and close. Our Sports Luxury test vehicle was loaded to the hilt with features, including: DVD satellite navigation system; electric windows; electric mirrors; retracting roof; dual zone climate control; heated and cooled driver and front passenger seats; auto dimming rear and side vision mirrors; reverse parking camera; Xenon headlights with adaptive function; electric seats with memory; trip computer; auto windscreen wipers; auto headlights and Keyless start.
