2011 Subaru Trezia

Auto Car | 2011 Subaru Trezia | Meet the All-New 2011 Subaru Trezia, the latest in a long line of Toyota-Subaru transformed as part of an ongoing collaboration between the two Japanese automakers. 2011 Subaru Trezia is basically a rebadged version of the Toyota Verso S (Ractis called in Japan), which was introduced in Europe in Paris Motor Show this year.

Differences between Subaru Trezia and Verso-S twin is limited to the Refreshed 2011 Subaru Impreza like grille, chrome treatment on the rear doors and of course the Subaru logo. Everything, including the interior and even the wheels and the construction of the hub cover remains unchanged.

Like Toyota in Japan with Ractis, Subaru Trezia will offer buyers the choice of a 1.3-liter or 1.5-liter engine and front wheel drive layout. 2011 Subaru Trezia Prices in Japan range from 1,360,000 yen to 1,870,000 yen.

The new Trezia is the latest in a long line of Toyota models turned into Subaru as part of the ongoing partnership between the two Japanese automakers. The Trezia essentially a rebadged version of the Toyota Verso-S, which was introduced in Europe at this year’s Paris Motor Show.

View same Verso-S including the interior and even the alloy wheel and hub cover designs remain unchanged. And the differences of both are limited only to the Impreza-like front grille, the chrome treatment on the tailgate trim and of course, Subaru’s logos.

2011 Subaru Trezia will offer buyers a choice of a 1.3-liter or a 1.5-liter engines as well as front- or all-wheel drive layouts. Prices in Japan range from 1.36 million Yen to 1.87 million Yen.

2003 Subaru B11S Concept by Four Design

Auto Car | 2003 Subaru B11S Concept by Four Design | Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd (FHI), a global manufacturer of transportation and aerospace-related products and the maker of Subaru automobiles, today announced the unveiling of a revolutionary concept car, the Subaru B11S, at the 73rd International Geneva Motor Show to be held from 6 to 16 March. Combining sophisticated sporty design with ample interior space, the Subaru B11S represents a new type of four-door Coupe. While it was developed to demonstrate FHI's future design direction and its strengthened design capabilities, the Subaru B11S also features superb driving performance, which is ensured by a symmetrical AWD (all-wheel drive) system in combination with a horizontally-opposed engine.

Since Kyoji Takenaka assumed the title of President and Chief Operating Officer in June 2001, FHI has been enhancing its design capabilities as part of company-wide reforms aimed at improving the Subaru brand. One year later, as FHI began placing greater emphasis on the importance of design development, the long experienced Subaru car designer, Kiyoshi Sugimoto, was promoted to the position of Vice President and General Manager of Subaru Design Department, which marked the first time that a car designer was appointed as an executive officer. The Subaru B11S is the first concept car designed under the leadership of Mr. Sugimoto with guidance from Mr. Takenaka in initial concept development. The Barcelona-based independent design studio, Fuore Design International, under the leadership of Erwin Himmel, which has been retained by FHI as a consultancy, contributed to the creation of the B11S.

Main features of the Subaru B11S
1. Concept
The B11S has been developed to pursue the concept of Gran Utility Turismo, which symbolises the embodiment of the perfect blend of sporty driving, comfort, functionality and elegance. The car incorporates all the crucial ingredients of this concept. It features attractive styling and packaging, which further reflect FHI's corporate philosophy, Innovative, Individual and Courageous; Subaru's technological strengths, such as the horizontally-opposed engine and a symmetrical AWD system; and driving performance equivalent to a high-performance sports car for the enthusiast.

2. Exterior design

The exterior design, composed of sophisticated flowing curves, expresses an elegant, sleek Coupe, in spite of the fact that the car comfortably accommodates four adults. The front fascia, which fortifies its sporty look, conjures up the turbine of a small jet plane and the freedom of flying wings - an association with FHI's corporate roots as an aircraft company, as well as a reminder of outstanding aerodynamic technology and performance.

The two pairs of side doors open like gates and latch in the middle without a conventional B-pillar, an arrangement that facilitates access to the back seats and makes interior room seem even more spacious. Developed specifically for the B11S, the frosted glass roof provides an open-air feeling, as in a convertible, and it creates a pleasant soft light inside the vehicle that enhances the quality look of its interior. The unique glass roof design was inspired by the design and construction of traditional Japanese umbrellas.

3. Interior design

In sharp contrast to the white pearl body colour, for the interior of the B11S the colour blue has been selected, influenced by Subaru's characteristic colour. Strong emphasis was placed on crafting an understated yet high-quality ambience in the cabin's design, which is reminiscent of Japanese interior decoration and its attention-to-detail approach. In addition, the folding rear seats allow easy access to and from the trunk for luggage or sports equipment. The interior provides a comfortable space for passengers and offers practical solutions at the same time.

4. Driving performance

The B11S has been equipped with a new horizontally-opposed, 6-cylinder engine. This engine, which will meet both the needs of driving pleasure and the demands of environmental considerations, is currently under development. A twin turbocharged engine is being developed that will ensure a smooth ride in low- and middle-speed ranges while it achieves a maximum output of 294 kW (400 PS) and a maximum torque of 550 Nm (56.1 kgfm).

The symmetrical AWD system integrated with a 5-speed automatic transmission comes with VTD (variable torque distribution), Subaru's unique, electronically controlled torque distribution system. While the basic torque distribution ratio of front to rear wheels is set at 35% and 65% respectively, the VTD optimally controls the torque distribution between front and rear wheels according to driving conditions and realises a high level of balance between the yawing tendency of a vehicle and high-speed stability.

2003 Subaru R1e Concept

Designed for ease-of-parking urban use but with a sporty stance which hints at high-grip roadholding, the 2+2 R1e is shorter than conventional Japanese minicars. It uses an Electric Vehicle power unit comprising a high-performance battery and advanced power control technology aimed at caring for the environment.

Subaru’s parent company, Fuji Heavy Industries (FHI), has announced that the R1e electric vehicle will begin silently rolling off dealer lots come 2009, which is a year ahead of schedule. Based off the standard gasoline-powered R1, the R1e scraps the 658-cc four-cylinder engine in favor of an electric motor and a set of lithium-ion batteries. The car can only reach 62 mph and a maximum range of 50 miles, but it can be recharged to 80% capacity in eight minutes - making it an ideal commuter car for Japan’s densely-populated urban cities.

Prices haven’t been released for the 2009 launch, but FHI says that by 2012 or 2013, it expects to be able to sell the car for around $17,500. A couple more years of mass production of the battery should allow for a price drop to about $13,100. Initially, FHI only plans to sell 100 of the cars annually, which is only 60 more than are being tested on roads right now and sounds rather conservative to us. Nevertheless, for those of you in Japan, your electric future is nearly here.

The light, compact, brushless motor uses a high-energy manganese lithium-iron battery which can be re-charged via a single-phase 200V AC outlet such as that used in the air-conditioning units of many Japanese homes.

2005 Subaru B5-TPH Concept

Auto Car | 2005 Subaru B5-TPH Concept | Subaru, known for their all-wheel-drive vehicles, revealed their “high-powered hybrid” concept model at the Tokyo Motor Show. The model is called the B5-TPH (Turbo Parallel Hybrid), and is a 3-door coupe, carrying a 260 bhp, 2.0-litre engine. The hybrid feature is provided by an electric motor/generator which sits between the transmission and the car’s engine.

It features a 4-cylinder, horizontally-opposed petrol engine which appears nowhere else in the existing Subaru range. It also boasts a Miller-cycle system, first seen in Mazda’s experimentations in the mid-90s with their Millenia sedan model. The main function of the system is to provide increased engine efficiency, reducing loss through pumping through the use of a power stroke or combustion expansion which is significantly longer than a standard compression stroke.

Although the Miller-system is normally considered to increase engine sluggishness at low speeds, the inclusion of the electric motor in the B5-TPH boosts standing-start torque to a level which, according the Subaru, outperforms even the Impreza Turbo.

The statistics for the electric motor are as follows: 13.4 bhp (10 kW) power, with 110 lb/ft (150 Nm) of torque. This is combined with the 256 bhp (191 kW) output and 253 lb/ft (343 Nm) torque produced by the petrol engine to give the overall performance figures.

The electric motor also serves as a generator, featuring a new manganese lithium-ion battery, which is chargeable to 95% capacity within just 5 minutes. The battery also operates during both urban driving conditions and when the vehicle is cruising. According to the manufacturer, this represents an economically viable solution to the dilemma of providing improved fuel consumption and reduced emissions whilst not wishing to compromise on the performance and acceleration demanded by driving enthusiasts.

In terms of styling, the Subaru B5-TPH features a crossover design with smooth contours and a sizeable tailgate, with the hinge sitting close behind the B-post. The crossover styling was designed by Subaru in partnership with the Forester. The result is a vehicle which brings together the functional, practical nature of a hatchback, the sporty fun of a coupe design, and the versatility and capabilities of a Sports Utility Vehicle, topped off by the generous eight inches of space between the bottom of the vehicle and the road surface.

Subaru suggest that, whilst the B5-TPH bears some resemblance to previous concept models, including the B9 Scrambler and B11S, it is not intended to suggest any future design directions. However, given the prominence and desirability of hybrid technology in the current climate, it is difficult to see what other reason Subaru would produce such a concept were it not an indication of things to come.

2005 Subaru Impreza WRX 300

Auto Car | 2005 Subaru Impreza WRX 300 | The Subaru Impreza WRX is a turbocharged version of the Subaru Impreza, an all-wheel drive automobile. It is available as a sedan or wagon. The WRX has become a popular choice for automobile enthusiasts wherever it is sold for its high performance, great handling, and relatively affordable price.

Originally introduced in 1992 in Japan, then shortly afterwards in Australia and Europe, the WRX had a turbocharged flat-4 2.0 L engine producing 211-260 PS (160-197 kW), according to the ECE or JIS standards. Compared to the base Impreza, the WRX had wider low-profile tires, larger brakes (further improved in later versions with the fitting of four-piston calipers and larger discs), and firmer, higher quality suspension components.

The current WRX is based on the Peter Stevens designed Subaru Impreza WRC. The instructions given by Prodrive boss David Richards were alleged to be "[to make a car that] looked like it was doing 100 mph, even when it was standing still in a car park".

A series of low-volume versions with even greater power and grip were built by Subaru's in-house modifier, Subaru Tecnica International (STi). STi versions of the Impreza, which produced 280 PS (206 kW) from new, are often raced, largely unmodified, in the Group N class in various rally championships to great success. Introduced in 1994, the STi has proven to be a very popular high-performance machine in the Japanese domestic market.

The second generation Impreza arrived in the Japanese market in 2000, and was available for export markets the following year. Power in the Japanese home market was 250 PS (184 kW), but due to emissions regulations it was detuned to 218 PS (160 kW) in Europe and 227 hp (169 kW) in North America, with a maximum torque of 294 N·m (217 ft·lbf). While the new model was more refined and handled better, it was not as popular with enthusiasts since its greater weight (1410 kg, or 3084 lb) hampered performance slightly, although 0-100 km/h acceleration time takes 5.9 seconds. In addition to the sedan model, a 5-door wagon was offered, and met with brisk sales.

The exterior "bug eyed" styling was widely regarded as somewhat unattractive, so Subaru introduced a mild facelift of the frontend in the 2002 Paris Auto Show, as well as improving power in the European version to 225 PS (165 kW). To celebrate the debut of the STi in the European market, 1,000 special "Prodrive" models were produced with exclusive Prodrive interior items designed by Peter Stevens. The Impreza WRX was on Car and Driver magazine's Ten Best list for 2002 and 2003.

A third update was introduced in mid-2005, including the performance models, with the controversial "jet intake and wings" grille first debuted on the Subaru R1 keicar, along with new headlights, taillights, and bumpers. Subaru states that they chose this style to go back to their heritage, paying homage to their grandfathered company, the Nakajima Aircraft Company, while others believe it is an interpretation of the Alfa Romeo grille originally designed by now Chief Designer at Subaru, Andreas Zapatinas. Another modification with the new facelift was the adoption of a 2.5 L engine for all export markets. The bigger engine is available with AVCS and produces 230 PS (169 kW) and 320 N·m (235 ft·lbf) of torque. However, these numbers are likely underrated as shown by multiple dynomometer tests. Japan retains the more powerful 2.0 L motor.

The Subaru Impreza WRX is used as the basis for the Saab 9-2X Aero. It is manufactured by Fuji Heavy Industries, Ltd.

In 2006, the turbocharged engine was awarded International Engine of the Year. This engine is also used in the Subaru Forester XT, as well as the re-badged Saab 9-2X.

2007 Subaru Impreza WRX STI Limited

The 2007 WRX STI Limited delivers all the power and performance of the standard model. This new limited-edition version adds a layer of refinement and design detail enhancements targeted at a new group of driving enthusiasts looking for supercar performance but with an understated demeanor. Designed by Subaru Tecnica International (STI), the high-performance and motorsports subsidiary of Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd., the WRX STI Limited is descended from the Subaru WRC Rally car

The 2007 WRX STI Limited stands apart from the standard model with an appearance that's more low-key, and even stealthy. A new trunk-mounted lip spoiler replaces the standard model's large dual-plane rear spoiler, and the black aluminum roof vane spoiler is deleted. A new, deep front lip spoiler further distinguishes the WRX STI Limited from the standard model.

New Enkei wheels with high-luster paint replace the BBS wheels, keeping the same 17 x 8-in. size and 225/45 ZR17 Bridgestone Potenza RE070 directional performance tires. Behind the new wheels, black Brembo brake calipers with white lettering have a more reserved appearance than the gold and red-painted calipers on the standard WRX STI.

All WRX STI Limited models feature distinctive black gloss B-pillar paint and high luster paint for the exterior mirrors, and this special edition model includes standard fog lights.

The interior of the 2007 Impreza WRX STI Limited balances the performance-directed design and attitude with a dose of refinement. For the first time in a WRX STI, the performance-design front seats are heated for all-season comfort. Also enhancing all-season driving pleasure, the 2007 WRX STI Limited features the first-ever power glass moonroof on this model. All Impreza WRX STI models are powered by a turbocharged and intercooled 2.5-liter DOHC Boxer engine producing 293 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 290 lb-ft of peak torque at 4,400 rpm. The Subaru Active Valve Control System (AVCS) variable valve timing technology helps provide strong torque characteristics throughout the engine's operating range. A manually operated water spray feature helps to bolster intercooler efficiency during spirited driving.

All WRX STI models are exclusively equipped with a 6-speed manual transmission that features carbon-plated double-cone synchronizers on 4th, 5th and 6th gears to help ensure durability.

Called the RB320, the new car features around £6,000 worth of extra equipment including the 320 PS Prodrive Performance Pack, yet costs £29,995 on-the-road – an increase of only £3,500.

Available only in Obsidian Black, the RB320 features bespoke 18 ins alloy wheels and specially developed Prodrive suspension comprising Bilstein dampers, a sports spring kit with revised rear anti-roll bar and a ride height lowered by 30 mm at the front and 10 mm at the rear.

Also standard on the RB320 are a chrome mesh front grille, front lip spoiler, quickshift gearchange, side sill plates and RB320-branded gear knob, carpet mats and exclusive exterior badging. Each owner will also receive an individually numbered black alloy tax disc holder.

The PPP boosts power to 320 PS at 6,000 rpm with torque leaping to 332 lb ft at 3,700 rpm. This reduces the 0-60 mph time to 4.8 seconds with a 0-100 mph time of 12.2 seconds.

And as a further incentive, those customers placing early orders with deposits will be offered a limited number of places at a special RB320 launch event next March at Prodrive’s test track in Warwickshire.

Not only will RB320 fans take delivery of their cars at the circuit but will be able to drive demonstration STIs around the track and meet rally celebrities.

In addition, customers will also be able to register on-line and reserve the limited-edition number of their choice via a special sub-section of Subaru’s website.

Finally, the first car is to be given away in a special raffle organised by Autosport magazine, donated by Subaru (UK) Limited.

The proceeds will go to the Richard Burns Foundation which helps those suffering from serious injury and illness.

Subaru rally ace, Richard Burns – holder of the FIA World Rally Championship driver’s title – died in November 2005 of brain cancer at the age of 32.

2008 Subaru Impreza WRX STI

Auto Car | 2008 Subaru Impreza WRX STI | It's rare when two classically opposed models debut at the same time. The Subaru WRX STI hits the show floor at the same time as its archrival, the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution. That's like debuting the new Camaro alongside the new Mustang. The differences between the two, however, have never been more clear: The Subaru is a hatchback, while the Mitsubishi is a sedan.

Obviously there's a lot more to distinguish the two, but like the Evo the STI is a turbocharged-four-cylinder all-wheel-drive sports car. It puts out more horsepower — 305 versus the Evo's 291 — but has less torque, with 290 pounds-feet versus 300 pounds-feet in the Evo. Still, the STI should be an impressive ride.

The car's hood is made of aluminum, which lessens weight. The 2008 is 22 pounds heavier than the 2007 it replaces. There's an incline-start assist that prevents the car from rolling backward in the time it takes the foot to leave the brake and hit the gas. The brakes are large Brembo numbers.

The interior gets a nice upgrade, with comfortable sport seats with Alcantara — which is a suede-like material — seat inserts and door panels.

Along with the Evo, the STI delivers one more example of a sports car in an unconventional shape.

Next-generation power unit system

2.0-liter Horizontally-Opposed direct fuel-injection turbo gasoline engine

Hybrid system

A downshift blipping control system has been included which interacts with the engine management system to match engine revs instantly when changing down gears.

Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd. (FHI), the maker of Subaru automobiles, today launches “Subaru Impreza WRX A-Line” which is a new addition to the current WRX STI model. The model goes on sale nationwide through Subaru dealerships today in Japan .

Based on the Impreza WRX STI, the WRX STI A-Line model was developed to offer its distinctive driving performance to a wider range of customers by integrating 2.5-litre turbocharged Boxer engine and 5 Speed Automatic Transmission with SPORTSHIFT*.

In addition, the current WRX STI was given some refinements to enhance comfort and quality feel; 8 way power adjustable front seats and a new body color, “Satin White Pearl”, is now available.

The model features the exclusively developed 2.5-litre Subaru BOXER turbo engine with SPORTSHIFT* E-5AT, while retaining the basic component such as chassis and body of the WRX STI, Subaru's performance flagship.

Engine:

- The unique 2.5-litre BOXER engine comes with a single scroll turbocharger and produces a flat torque from the low and mid-rev range to high-rev range.
- Dual Active Valve Control System (AVCS) was adopted to control continuously valve timing on both intake and exhaust valves, which improves low and mid-range range torque, high-rev range output and environmental friendliness.
- Tumble Generation Valve (TGV) controls the intake air stream to generate high combustion efficiency.

Interior:

- 8-way power adjustable driver's seat is standard. Leather seats are available as optional and include (front) seat heating. Soft leather door trim with silver stitch is featured.
