Hummer H2 Safari Off Road

Auto Car | Hummer H2 Safari Off Road | The PR materials for the HUMMER H2 Safari say that the big truck's matte olive green paint is designed to help it blend in on the trail. We get the idea, but while H2s may do many things, "blending in" ain't exactly one of 'em, low-key paint notwithstanding. So, while it may scare away the gazelles you're trying to hunt, you can still take advantage of the amenities, of which there are many.

A sliding canvas roof panel opens up the big HUMMER's interior to Mother Nature, and the experience can be made even airier thanks to the removable rear quarter windows. Inside, you enjoy the new Gaia-enhanced drive from weather-resistant nylon-covered seats, and the instrument panel has been gussied up in matching colors and brushed metal trim. A dockable GPS sits on the center console, too. While a pith helmet is not included, fuel and gun racks are, as well as a boatload of gear like a Warn winch, 35" Mickey Ts, and a sampling of official HUMMER accessories.

As is the case with the H3R, HUMMER's closely watching the reaction to this concept. If it's good enough, a similar H2 in limited-production form is a distinct possibility. We can already see the TV commercial: it would be just like the Jeep one where friendly forest critters jump through the Liberty's open top, only in this one, a Partagas-chomping Bob Lutz would be driving the open-roofed HUMMER, from which he'd be blowing away attacking terradactyls and sabre-toothed tigers with a Desert Eagle. For that reason alone, this must see production.

The Hummer H2 is an SUV and SUT that was marketed by General Motors under the Hummer brand.[3] It is a large truck (slimmer than the Hummer H1), while longer, heavier, and taller with room for six passengers (including driver), seven passengers in some models. The rearmost part of the H2 SUV was modified to a pickup truck bed for the 2005 H2 SUT ("Sport Utility Truck"). Both the H2 SUV and SUT are being discontinued after the 2010 model year as GM is winding down the entire Hummer brand. It was the only one of the trucks to have the letters HUMMER between the grill.

The H2 was built under contract by AM General at a specially constructed plant in Mishawaka, Indiana, USA. GM's GMT820 truck shares platforms with the Chevrolet Tahoe and GMC Yukon, but those vehicles differ in many ways and are constructed in three other GM plants. The H2's final frame assembly is made up of 3 sections: The front uses a modified GM 2500-Series utility frame, the mid-section is all new and is completely boxed, and the rear section uses a modified GM 1500-Series frame which is upgraded for the 8,600 pounds (3,900 kg) gross vehicle weight.
The H2 was nominated for the North American Truck of the Year award for 2003.
Unlike the other full-size GM trucks and SUVs, the H2 remained on the GMT800 platform after 2007, but was given an interior facelift similar to the likes of the new-for-2007 GMT900 SUVs.

HUMMER H3 E85

Auto Car | HUMMER H3 E85 | Some have described the Hummer H3 as the answer to a question no one asked. But, let’s think about that title for a moment. Someone must have asked the question or this ostentatious 4-wheel-drive sport-utility wouldn’t have come to be. Certainly, GM is selling enough of them to satisfy a demand out there. Perhaps, more specifically, the question being asked was, “How can I get a sport-utility with the image and ambiance of a Hummer without the bulk and impracticality of the H1 or even the H2?”
I remember when GM announced the unique relationship put together with AM General, maker of the military Humvee, when the H2 was in the cooker. GM would build the plant in Michawaka, Indiana and do the engineering on the H2. AM General would build it and GM would have marketing rights to all the Hummer products, including all the ones to come. At that time part of the plan was to develop an H3 and even an H4. Well, we’re looking at, and driving, the H3 this week. And there are rumors about an H4 in ’09 but a platform has not yet been determined.

Criticism is often leveled at GM for being too timid in the marketplace, that is, making products too bland and too predictable to be must-have vehicles. Those criticisms ignore the trio of Hummer models. Recent announcement that the H1, civilian version of the massive military vehicle will go away for good soon will not, in my humble opinion, dilute the tough and brutish image of the brand. H2 and H3 look the part of a take-no-prisoners approach to sport-utility design and there still seems to be enough macho customers out there to buy them. Additionally, all the Hummers have impeccable off-road credentials.
Look at our raucous red Hummer H3. Built on GM’s relatively new mid-size truck platform, shared with the competent Colorado, the H2 is clad with all manner of plastic pieces to make it look like its big brother: bulging fenders with large flat wheel arches, fuel filler recessed into the fender, and disproportionately small windows. A black plastic panel in the hood hints at the big Hummer’s hood vents. Huge, military style tow hooks adorn the blacked-out bumpers. The nose is protected by a huge black grille guard. The rocker panel has a bumper bar rather than a running board. The nearly vertical windshield is topped with five amber, truck-like running lights. A cigar box-size pod on either side of the base of the windshield hints at the high-mounted air intakes of Big Brother. And, how about those huge tires - high profile 285/75R16 Bridgestone Dueler A/Ts, ready to dance over the boulders on the Rubicon Trail.

Inside, the H3 is a bit more conventional. The gauges and controls are simple and intuitive. Seats are firm and comfortable. Dual front air bags protect front passengers and head-curtain airbags are optional. The fat-rimmed steering wheel feels meaty and tough. It’s a good thing the passenger side has a grab bar. My pretty blonde has to use it to pull herself up into the seat. Her poor father, Herb, who has rather limited strength and mobility, really struggled to get into the back seat, using the two grab bars back there. He finally made it. All-in-all the H2 is very pleasant inside, once you’re able to get in.
Drivability is excellent as well. The high perch gives the expected commanding view limited just a bit by the smaller than expected windows. From inside the hood looks to be broader than the Platte River in June, but we’re able to judge the corners reasonably well. Steering is quick and predictable with a tighter than expected turning radius. The big, knobby tires make it wander a bit on irregular surfaces. It doesn’t feel particularly cumbersome.
I found the H3 to be remarkably underpowered. The Vortec 3500, DOHC 3.5-liter in-line 5-cylinder engine generates about 220 horsepower and 225-lb.ft. of torque. The horsepower peaks at 5,600 rpm – pretty useless – but the torque peaks at 2,800 rpm – closer to where you want it. The H3 weighs about 4,700 pounds so it takes that entire limited grunt to just get down the road adequately. The good news is that a 5.3-liter V8 is expected for next year’s H3.

A 5-speed manual transmission is standard but our test car is equipped with the optional 4-speed 4L65E automatic with Stabilitrak Stability Enhancement System. Full-time all-wheel-drive with a 2-speed transfer case is standard. Towing capacity is 4,500 pounds and payload is 1,100 pounds.
Cargo space is pretty good. We have 55.7 cubic-feet capacity with the rear seats folded nearly flat and 29.5 cubic-feet with the seats up. We didn’t have any cargo netting or other utilities in our test car but there are half-dozen tie-down hooks. In order to accommodate this cargo capacity the full-size spare tire and wheel are mounted on the outside of the rear gate. While that tailgate a mighty heavy unit, it is balance and sprung perfectly allowing for easy opening and closing.
As we would expect with any Hummer, its off-road credentials are excellent. Skid plates and protective shields run the entire length of the undercarriage. With 8 ½-inches of ground clearance (9.1-inches with the optional bigger tires), approach and departure angles of 37.5 and 35.5-degrees respectively, along with plenty of suspension travel, we’d feel right at home on a rocky trail, if we had one nearby.

Warranty is 4-years/50,000 miles. OnStar is included for a year.
EPA rates the H3 at 16 mpg city and 20 mpg highway – somewhat better than its big brothers.
The standard price on the H3 is $28,935. Optional on our test truck are: Adventure Package (off-road suspension and carpeted floor mats) for $1,375, 4-Speed automatic transmission with Stabilitrak-Stability Control at $1,695, AM/FM 6-disc in-dash CD changer, 7-speaker Monsoon system with amplifier and rear woofer costing $390, and XM Satellite radio service at $325. We also have $1,420 worth of dealer options: roof mounted lamp markers, black wrap-around brush guard and rubber floor mats. Our bottom line is $35,550.
I’m beginning to get used to the brash styling after a week with the H3, but I’m still disappointed with the lack of power and the difficulty of getting into and out of it. With those few limitations I’ve begun to appreciate the courage GM exhibits in bringing all the Hummer products to market. Hummers are certainly not everyone’s cup ‘o tea but I’m they sure add a unique dimension to the market.

2010 GeigerCars Unleashes Hummer H2 Bomber

Auto Car | 2010 GeigerCars Unleashes Hummer H2 Bomber | In its regular trim, the Hummer H2 not only looks fantastic, but also brings with it a real degree of off-road capabilities. But this can go much further, as GeigerCars.de have proved with the “H2 Bomber” on rubber tracks.

In contrast to the regular wheels with their 8.5” x 20” rims encompassing 305/60 tyres, the specialists from Munich have equipped their project SUV with a Mattracks 88M1-A1 rubber tracks at each wheel. Those massive structures, 40cm wide and 150cm long, guarantee unrivalled traction on virtually any type of terrain, whether the vehicle is needed for agriculture, emergency services or expedition. Even extreme gradients are handled without a sweat, not least thanks to the powerful 8 cylinders under the bonnet which gives you 398 bhp and 574 Nm of torque.

Designed to be the ultimate off-road vehicle, the Bomber features Mattracks 88M1-A1 rubber tracks (8.5" x 20" wheels with 305/60 tires are standard). Measuring 150cm (59.1") long and 40cm (15.7") wide, the tracks "guarantee unrivalled traction on virtually any type of terrain, whether the vehicle is needed for agriculture, emergency services or expedition."

Besides the tracks, the H2 has a matte silver paint job (with Air Force themed lettering) and a roof box with Hella lights. Inside, Geiger installed a sunroof, a Kenwood navigation system, and a rear seat entertainment system.

Power comes from a 6.2-liter V8 engine with 398 bhp (297 kW / 404 PS) and 574 Nm (423 lb-ft) of torque. If that doesn't float your boat, an LPG Autogas system (with a 155 liter fuel tank) is also available.

How well the GeigerCars.de Hummer acquits itself on the rubber tracks can be left to Autobild editor Wolfgang Blaube to experience: He explored to legendary Nordschleife of the Nürburgring in the depths of winter with the circuit covered in snow and was completely captured by the “new dimension of fun” after just a few kilometres.

Also in the interior of the GeigerCars.de “Bomber”, finished in a matte silver, with extra headlights on the roof and the lettering printed in an army style, the fun factor is not missed out: The luxury design fulfils every wish and a sunroof is every bit a part of the Hummer project as the navigation system with a DVD drive from Kenwood, the roof monitor with headphones or the rear-view camera including a monitor in the rear-view mirror. If requested, the Geigercars team can of course equip each Hummer model with an economical LPG autogas system and other extras.

If you’re on the lookout for an off-road master, the H2 is definitely the right choice. With a Hummer equipped with rubber tracks, no terrain remains inaccessible.

HUMMER HX Concept Revealed

Auto Car | HUMMER HX Concept Revealed | After much anticipation, HUMMER revealed their newest HX concept to the masses via the Detroit Auto Show. Loud music, lights, and men repelling from the rafters helped welcome the HUMMER HX to the stage. The HX brings a more youthful approach to the brand, both in the vehicle’s design and projected (unofficial) price point of around $25k.

HUMMER appeals to young people globally and served as a perfect first assignment for our newest talent," said Ed Welburn, vice president of global design and product planning. "Today's graduates from top design schools are ready to hit the ground running. The HUMMER design challenge gave our newest designers an opportunity to sprint."

The youthful and entry-level-sized HX boasts removable roof panels, doors, and a modular rear-roof assembly which never leave open-air motoring more than just moments away. The concept is powered by a 3.6 litre direct-injected V6 that delivers power to all four wheels by a full-time 4WD system that features locking differentials in front and rear.

Inside, an aeronautically-inspired interior boasts aircraft-style seating and a reconfigurable instrument cluster that's mounted to an exposed cross-member. The cluster and comes with a removable top for added storage inside, and the instruments automatically change from a highway-mode to an off-road mode when the vehicle is shifted into low-range. A rubberized floor is easily cleaned and adds to the machine's rugged look.

Since the HUMMER HX is capable of running on E85, GM also announced a partnership with a company who is developing a method of making ethanol from just about anything – trash, old tires, you name it. Estimates by GM suggest that by implementing more flex-fuel vehicles, billions of gallons of gasoline can be saved every year. Check out the video AutoBlog shot of the event below.

Hearing the HX start up behind the closed curtain got my adrenaline pumping – the V6 power plant sounds great very throaty and powerful. After seeing the vehicle in person, and even getting to get inside the HX, I’m even more excited about where HUMMER is going. Even though the HX is more compact, it has a tougher and more agressive look than any HUMMER model since the H1. It’s still talked about as a concept, but Bob Lutz announced awhile ago that a smaller HUMMER is definitely coming, so expect it to be very similar to the HX. Rumor is the HX is 90% production — wow! For more pictures from the reveal, check out AutoBlog’s HX Gallery.

More Detroit Auto Show coverage will come later in the week once all the interviews are compiled, and updates on the future of HUMMER as well. Will the H1 make a return? How long will the H2 model be offered? What engines will be available in the H3T pickup truck? Stay tuned!

2010 Hummer H3 And H3T Treading Water Before Real Change

Auto Car | 2010 Hummer H3 And H3T Treading Water Before Real Change | Hummer is in the midst of a move—from General Motors to China's Sichuan Tengzhong—but the brand has announced details for its 2010 H3 SUV and H3T pickup, which are slated to go on sale next month.

Changes are minimal. The standard engine is still a 239-horsepower, 3.7-liter five-cylinder engine, but most noteworthy is that the H3 line finally gets the Flex Fuel version of GM's 300-horsepower, 5.3-liter V-8. The engine can run either on regular gasoline or any ethanol blend up to 85 percent ethanol, 15 percent gasoline (E85).

Fuel economy ratings stand at 13 mpg city, 16 highway with the V-8, or just 9/12 running on E85.

Features and options remain pretty much the same for 2010, with just three new colors—Red Rock Metallic, Silver Stone Metallic, and Canyon Metallic—added to the lineup. The H3 has impressive off-roading and rock-crawling prowess, as well as the ability to ford water up to 24 inches deep.

Prices for these 2010 Hummer models don't change significantly either versus 2009. The H3 starts at $33,390—exactly the same as last year, with the destination fee remaining $780. The H3T is up slightly for 2010, at $30,915, while the H3T Alpha is down slightly to $35,680.

In our Bottom Line review of the 2009 Hummer H3T, we appreciate the model's styling and off-road prowess—and think that it's a reasonably good value for a vehicle with such capabilities—but we criticize this models ridiculously high weight of more than 5,000 pounds, which combined with the old-tech four-speed automatic leads to lazy acceleration. On-road ride quality and outward visibility are other weaknesses.

Hummer's heavy, gas-guzzling image looks destined to die out unless it gets smart and becomes a little greener. That seems to be what Hummer CEO James Taylor hints at in the release—that future models will be lighter and more fuel-efficient, and that the ethanol compatibility is "just the first step in Hummer's evolution to offer responsible, yet highly capable all-terrain vehicles."

Although Hummer is in the process of separating its management operations from GM, the Hummer H3 and H3T will still be produced at GM's Shreveport, Louisiana plant, alongside the mechanically related Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon trucks, until 2012.

Concept Cars: HUMMER HB

Auto Car | Concept Cars: HUMMER HB | The latest creation of Romanian designer Andrus Ciprian is the HUMMER HB, an extreme off-road vehicle with almost no front or rear overhangs, and massive wheels and tires for tackling almost any surface.

The HUMMER HB's construction consists of a body-on-frame format with aluminium and carbon fibre being the main materials used throughout. The vehicle would be offered in two different versions. One would be equipped with a smaller windscreen split into three sections, and an array of cameras around the vehicle which relay video to screens around the driver. This model would be aimed at buyers who want greater security. The second model is fitted with a more conventional single frame windscreen and is designed more for the serious off-roader with additional lighting mounted on the roof.

The underside of the HB is protected by armored paneling which protects the drivetrain and passengers from rocks and other potentially damaging objects.

Hidden within the front bumper is a powerful winch for helping extract the HB, or other vehicles, from sticky situations.

The HUMMER HB is powered by a V6 engine which is biofuel capable. Power is sent to all four wheels through a six-speed automatic transmission.
