Auto Car | Toyota IQ… Dubbed as the smallest four passenger car in the world! | From my previous articles, the smart for two and NIDO EV from Pininfarina now comes another microcar and this time it’s from Toyota. It was introduced in the 2008 Geneva Auto Show and named as Toyota IQ. Sales started in the UK on January 2009 and in Japan on October2008.
Having an additional small car seems logical for families in which the members own larger size vehicles. Why? Well, it’s simply mobility. It could be used as a stand by vehicle whenever a trip to the grocery store or just to go and visit your neighbor at the other side of the block is needed. The best purpose is definitely for city driving and that you could reserve your bigger car for long distance travel. Of course, the price must be taken into consideration as well. If you could afford it and the cost is reasonable, why not? Toyota IQ is priced at more or less 55K RM dated January 2009.
Toyota emphasizes the name IQ which corresponds to I – stands for ‘individuality’, ‘innovations’, and ‘intelligence. Q- Stands for ‘quality’. The design includes maximum cabin space, forward windscreen location and over all compactness.
iQ is designed for buyers who want more than just urban mobility, but who are also looking for space, refinement and a vehicle that is kinder to the environment. Its revolutionary packaging is achieved through six space-saving, interlinked engineering innovations that represent a break-through in Toyota’s vehicle development.
Toyota has created a “techno-organic” design for the interior, which fuses geometric precision with inner beauty. This is demonstrated in the floating “V” centre console that dominates the asymmetrical dashboard and the matt silver door handles, which have a flowing, manta ray shape.
The steering wheel has a flat bottom to give the driver greater legroom and audio controls are positioned on the wheel to save space on the centre console and make operation easier for the driver.
The ultra-slim seatbacks are formed in a one-piece moulding that enhances iQ’s edgy feel, while also helping free up additional passenger space. A storage tray is concealed below the rear seat, another feature that does not sacrifice cabin space. For extra luggage room, the 50:50 split rear seats can be folded flat.
Creating more passenger space in such a compact vehicle was a key challenge for the Toyota design team. iQ’s interior is surprisingly spacious, made possible by six interlinked engineering innovations.
Achieving this milestone in vehicle development required a drastic change of mindset. The engineers have to reconsider the location of various components, rather than simply redesigning parts to a smaller size.
The result is a breakthrough in “small yet spacious” packaging, which at the same time has been designed to meet Euro NCAP’s top five-star safety rating.
iQ is 2,985mm long and 1,500mm high. Its compact ingenuity lies in its comparatively long, 2,000mm wheelbase.
It comes with a 998 cc to 1.3 cc Petrol Engine and 1.3 cc Diesel Engine, 2 and 4 seat occupant capacities and the engine includes start and stop system. It comes with the standard features as Anti-lock Brakes, brake assist, electronic brake force distribution, traction control and Vehicle Stability Control. It also comes with 9 airbags – side torso airbags, dual front airbags and side curtain airbags.
