2005 Pagani Zonda F

Auto Car | 2005 Pagani Zonda F | The custom-built Pagani Zonda F is constructed using the skills and expertise of craftsmen and the most advanced technology available. Its principal construction materials are carbon fibre, aluminium alloys, avional, chrome-molybdenum alloy, titanium and leathers. The concept behind the Zonda F was to develop a vehicle which was lightweight, safe and individual, offering superlative performance. Comparisons can be drawn between the racing inspiration behind the Zonda F and that of the 1960’s Miura.

Fangio’s wish was for the Zonda F to be fitted with a Mercedes-Benz engine, and his wish has been granted by AMG, whose 12-cylinder powerhouse has been provided to Pagani. It is a lightweight engine, producing 600 bhp and a torque of 576 lb/ft.

Each individual component of the Zonda F is scrutinised and recorded by Pagani, resulting in a custom manual for each vehicle. Such meticulous methods are more reminiscent of the aviation industry than car manufacture.

Sculpted body

The Zonda F cuts through the air like a knife through butter. Its immense power produces considerable down force on the road surface, gluing the tyres to the tarmac to enable maximum efficiency in power and torque transfer.

The significance of aerodynamic sculpting is even more pronounced in terms of safety. Emergency braking and reaction times are facilitated by the Zonda F’s supreme road holding. The contribution of the carbon-ceramic brakes cannot be doubted, but Pagani have included many more features to improve safety. Shock absorber geometry, reduced vehicle weight and a carefully designed low centre of gravity all enable the car to remain flawlessly flat to the ground – even the rear tyres show no lift.

Assisted by the aerodynamics of the Zonda F’s body shape, the AMG engine produces some outstanding performance statistics. The Clubsport variant generates 650 bhp at 6,200 rpm, with torque peaking off at 576 lb//ft at 4,000 rpm. These factors combine to propel the Zonda F from 0-62 mph in an astonishing 3.6 seconds with a top speed of 214 mph.

This is a highly reactive, safe sports car. It exhibits little or no body roll even in the tightest of corners, and the Nardi steering wheel gives the driver the impression of being in direct contact with the tarmac below. The Zonda F is equipped with minimal electronics.

Pagani have of course reacted to the modern market’s demand for comfort and driveability, and interior refinement is surprising for a super car with a top speed of 214 mph. Yet the manufacturers have not abandoned their original concept of creating a world-class sports car based on quality and performance.
