Auto Car | Chevy SO-CAL Cobalt Bonneville Racer in 2006 | Four young women were among the many frustrated drivers on the wet salt of August. They had participated in the GM Performance Division innovative student project, a partnership with a team from California Street Rods have to apply their technical and organizational skills to the planning, construction and testing of a Cobalt SS land speed racer during a 12-week internship. The four students - Tessa Russell, Sarah Jubenville, Heather and Idalia Ovalle Chemistruc - had been in high-speed trip to the GM Desert Proving Grounds in preparation for its scheduled run at Bonneville certified. The Student Project Cobalt reaches 140 mph in shakedown runs, and was in line to make a record attempt, when the rain came.
"The purpose of the Bonneville student program was to give four young female engineers an opportunity to practice their skills in a unique setting them with practical experience and introducing them to GM's resources and processes," said Michelle Burrows, GM Performance Division Student Project . "Setting a record would have a fine bonus, but the fact that the car was built and tested on a very compressed schedule, the project is a success."
