2008 Peugeot HYmotion3 Compressor

Auto Car | 2008 Peugeot HYmotion3 Compressor | Occupying a half-way house between the world of the scooter and the car, the HYmotion3 compressor is a highly original proposal designed to facilitate urban mobility. Attractive thanks to its dynamic, streamlined and futuristic style ; it is an interesting concept combining numerous benefits (size, safety and comfort) with ”HYmotion” hybrid/petrol technology. This new generation technology creates a three wheel drive vehicle, benefiting safety and driveability and combining economy with an environmentally-friendly specification (CO2 emissions of only 47 g/kph in the combined cycle, zero in electric only mode).

The HYmotion3 compressor concept is a means of transport with no affi liation to a particular type of vehicle. With its three wheels and its streamlined body, it is something of a missing link between two worlds which to date are quite distinct: that of the scooter and that of the car. With an electric motor in each of its two front wheels, coupled at the rear with a petrol engine, it brings into play very innovative hybrid technologies allowing each of its wheels to provide motive power.

Giving full rein to their creativity and expertise, two separate Peugeot teams converged on a similar idea and finally worked in tandem to develop a particularly original project: the HYmotion3 compressor. This ”concept car”, or rather ”concept scooter”, is based on the extensive experience of Peugeot Motorcycles, specialists in the scooter fi eld, as well as the creativity and innovative capabilities of stylists and engineers working for Automobiles Peugeot.

To create this concept, Peugeot was able to draw on its extensive experience in the world of transportation enabling each individual, according to their age or their needs, to choose from among the Marque’s cycles, motorcycles and cars.

This vehicle offers an ideal mix of the benefits of a scooter and particular characteristics of a car. Its design is based on three wheels for maximum stability, safety and driveability. Its width of 82 cm enables it to thread a path through urban traffic with all the efficiency of a two-wheeler. The front windscreen extends to the rear of the vehicle to form a highly effective shield against bad weather for the rider and passenger.

In addition, regulations in France allow the vehicle to be driven with a B licence only, giving it a wide range of potential customers.

Finally, this vehicle incorporates HYmotion technology, also featured on other concept-cars in the Peugeot exhibition space at the Paris Motor Show. This new generation hybrid technology incorporates the supercharged petrol engine already featured in the Peugeot Satelis scooter. With a power of 15 kW (20 bhp) driving the rear wheel, it is combined with two electric motors, each with an output of 3 kW, located in the front wheels.

This configuration develops a maximum power of 21 kW (29 bhp) for a particularly low fuel consumption of 2.0 litres/100 kph and CO2 emissions of 47 g/kph in the combined cycle, or 0 in electric only mode. The design of the HYmotion3 compressor, with its three wheel drive, provides positive benefits for both safety and driveability.

Thanks to its extreme hybridisation, the HYmotion3 compressor concept creates a new benchmark in terms of safety (improved traction and braking), practicality and environmental-friendliness, offering original versatility at one with its environment.

The main characteristic of this scooter is the all-wheel drive on three wheels. The thermal 125cc engine has Satelis Compressor and produces 15kw (20hp) from the rear wheel.
In 2006, weight and aerodynamic tests carried out in the wind tunnel saw the Satelis scooter obtain the best SCx on the market and, as a result, offer one of the lowest fuel consumptions in its segment.

Since 2008, Peugeot Motorcycles has included a 50 cc, 4-stroke scooter in its range offering particularly low fuel consumption, the V-Clic.

With HYmotion technology, benefi ting from experience derived from previous technological demonstrators (307, 307 CC and 308 Hybrid HDi), the HYmotion3 compressor represents a major advance in terms of ”customer” benefits. These benefits include: safety, driveability, economy and also environmental-friendliness.

Peugeot RC HyMotion 4 Hybrid Concept

Auto Car | Peugeot RC HyMotion 4 Hybrid Concept | PSA Peugeot Citroen just managed to amaze everyone at the Paris Motor Show the other day, when they showcased the new all-wheel-drive diesel-electric hybrid powertrain called HYmotion4. It’s already used on the Hypnos and Prologue with a 2.0-liter HDi diesel engine with FAP particulate filter for the front wheels and an electric motor for the rear wheels – that outputs 200hp, a six-speed automated gearbox, a 68 mpg fuel efficiency and only 109 g/km of CO2, that sounds like a deal.

However the newest RC Hymotion4 concept (in the pictures above and below) is a four-door GT that sports a total of 313 hp from a 1.6 litre THP engine that outputs 218 bhp and a 70 W electric engine that sports 95hp. All these with only 109 g/km of CO2 emissions that will “eat” 4.5 litres of fuel for every 100 km. Oh and if you were interested in knowing how fast it is, it does 0 to 100km/h in just 4.4 seconds.

The RC HYmotion4 is a concept car born from the passion and expertise of Peugeot's stylists and engineers. This "GT" coupe is the missing link between the RC 'Clubs' and RC 'Diamonds concept cars revealed in 2002 and the 908 RC, one of the stars of the 2006 Paris Motor Show. It is a real laboratory of future ideas, bringing together numerous stylistic, engineering and technological ideas in a single vehicle.

The RC HYmotion4 is an accessible and versatile car, with four doors, four seats and four wheel drive, coupled with a highly innovative electric/petrol hybrid architecture (HYmotion4 technology). Its aim: a very high level of effi ciency both in terms of performance (with its potential 230 kW/313 bhp) and minimal impact on the environment (CO2 emissions of 109 g/km in the combined cycle or Zero in electric mode). It is an exciting, eco-effi cient vehicle which has all the characteristics that create a real passion for driving. A synthesis of ideas that demonstrates that respect for the environment and driving pleasure can be compatible.

The dawn of a new day... Over the distant horizon, the already powerful rays of the rising sun strike the façades of the buildings in their path. Among them, the expansive glazed façade of the Peugeot Design Centre which immediately embrace the new light of day. Daylight then fi lls the immense workshop where undetected activity has long been in progress.

In fact, right here at this time, a small army of stylists are adding the fi nal touches to their latest creation. As their eyes gradually adjust to the brightness, each stands back from their work, exposing the contours of the car's body to the rays of the sun.

Centimetre by centimetre the sun's rays caress the car's carbon "skin", highlighting its pure and sensual contours. They illuminate the Lion badge at the front of the car, the strongly styled lines of the bonnet and the expressive design of the headlamps, bringing the shape to life. The latter also blend harmoniously together in an uninterrupted fl ow that emphasises the muscular design of the wheel arches, the raised window line and the two doors on either side of the vehicle.

A second team of engineers also share these intense and short moments. They are finishing the installation of the particularly innovative hybrid traction system into this automotive sculpture.

As, in the great tradition of Peugeot concept cars, this vehicle is an automobile first and foremost. It is a car which is fully in step with the times, but it is technologically ahead of its time. The 1.6 litre THP engine which is fitted at the rear of the vehicle is combined with a 70 kW electric motor under the bonnet. The end result is a maximum power of 230 kW (313 bhp), ensuring high levels of driving pleasure, combined with CO2 emissions in the combined cycle of only 109 g/km, or zero in electric only drive mode. Another major innovation made possible by the design is the vehicle's four-wheel drive system, which directly benefits road holding and therefore safety.

Many other new features are available on the vehicle, for example the original design of the suspension and the on-board technology within the passenger compartment, again benefi ting both driving comfort and the wellbeing of its four potential occupants.

On this morning in the middle of August, the company's senior managers are also on the scene. Because being present at the birth of a new concept car is a rare event, a privileged moment. They soak up the atmosphere surrounding the new car, instilled with all the values of the Lion badge. These values, modernised or reinterpreted, remain fundamentally the same. In this cradle of design of future vehicles, there reigns a mood charged with emotion and passion, a genuine love of the motor car.

Right in front of the eyes of these onlookers, a new page in Peugeot's history is being written. The RC HYmotion4 is in fact the forerunner of many new traits: details, major trends, and also futuristic technologies... It therefore occupies a place of honour in the Peugeot space at the Paris Motor Show, alongside other vehicles also pointing the way towards new horizons. But this car is the forerunner of something else too.

This four-door "GT", the missing link between the RC "Clubs" and RC "Diamonds" concept cars of 2002 and the 908 RC of 2006, embodies the permanency of Peugeot's values, focused on driving pleasure from every perspective.

In this endeavour, the technology used to improve the environmental effi ciency has in no way compromised the design, aerodynamics, style or driving pleasure. On the contrary, these innovations are adaptable and in the final analysis make driving pleasure more accessible. The RC HYmotion4 is therefore synonymous with pure motoring enjoyment, yet at the same time is environmentally-friendly.

It is a vehicle proud to assert that in a world where the pace of change grows ever quicker, the founding values of Peugeot have never been lost, and that the flame of motoring passion continues to burn brightly. We are at the dawn of a new day...but one which is not so different from any other.

A day which follows on from those that preceded it. A day like many others in Peugeot's history. A day the likes of which we shall no doubt see again... made possible by passionate and inspired men and women bound together by a real confidence in themselves and in the future.

2009 Peugeot BB1 Concept

Auto Car | 2009 Peugeot BB1 Concept | With its BB1 concept car, Peugeot has pushed back the conventions and boundaries of current automobile manufacturing to create a totally new solution to the current and future needs of urban mobility.

Capable of seating four people in a vehicle just 2.5 metres long, the BB1 concept car is a full electric vehicle that reinvents the automobile in every way: architecture, style, interior design, interior space, connectivity – while all the time respecting the environment.

The world is always on the move and urban traffic levels are forever increasing. Everyone wants to save time, but the protection of the environment is an ever increasing priority.

To meet these ever changing needs, Peugeot has developed a range of mobility options across all of its many product offerings. Depending on age and individual needs, everyone can find a suitable solution in Peugeot’s lion-branded range of bikes, motorbikes and automobiles.

Peugeot are, however, constantly studying and sharing mobility ideas within all the different sister companies to pool their expertise and their creativity to create particularly innovative and original projects. Indeed, Peugeot has always sought to be a global, recognized provider of mobility, with an inventive, responsible and competitive range of vehicles, whether they are on two, three or four wheels.

The BB1 concept car, unveiled at the 63rd Frankfurt Motor Show, paves the way for this ideal by pushing back the barriers to bring an innovative, fun, expressive and stylish vehicle. This electric vehicle aims to explore new grounds with regards to urban mobility.

The design brief for the BB1 was to meet the mobility needs of everyday individuals on a daily basis and provide maximum versatility, a compact size, manoeuvrability (3.5m turning circle) and good performance levels.

To achieve all this, the Peugeot teams faced a real challenge – never before in the history of the automobile has a car been created to accommodate four people in an overall length of just 2.5m. This amazing use of interior space can also be adapted to increase the potential load capacity, even though its “compact” size gives it the ability to park in extremely tight spots – even perpendicular to the pavement.

To meet this challenge, the design of the structure of the passenger compartment has drawn inspiration from two-wheeled vehicles in terms of the ergonomics and controls. The driver controls the vehicle by adopting a novel driving position – more vertical than is usual. This is mainly made possible through the absence of foot pedals, as in a conventional car.

Access to the vehicle is through the reverse opening doors, while the load area access is through an innovative tail board / tailgate design. The interior can be transformed as required to offer a load volume of up to 160 litres (with four occupants), or 855 litres (with just one person in the car).

The style of the vehicle highlights the interior space and the unique driving position. With its bold styling lines at the front, large glazed surface area, low door waistline (for the passenger compartment ventilation system) and extended wheel arches, the car represents a real move away from current vehicle design.

Robust and protective, the quality and technology shine through in every detail, such as the “full LED” front headlights and rear view cameras. The double bubble roof, similar to the RCZ, helps with the feeling of space within the vehicle, as does the openness and brightness created by the large glazed surface areas.

The BB1 includes an extensive range of interactive technologies. The colour multi-function display and the vehicle’s audio system provide the ideal link for all the functionalities of a “smart phone”: telephone, navigation, Internet access, radio, MP3… Just connect the device to the USB connector and the 12V power socket if necessary.

Universal and user-friendly, this system enables the BB1 to provide a range of essential services without the need for multiple pieces of equipment, bringing extra safety to driving and saving considerable weight.

Similarly, the rear-view cameras remove the need for mirrors, optimising the width of the vehicle and improving its aerodynamics, while adding to the high-tech feeling of the interior.

Creative – the BB1 breaks new ground with its electric drive system. It is fitted with two electric motors mounted in the rear wheels, designed in association with Michelin. This original set-up maximises the interior space and draws its inspiration from the world of the quad bike. They produce a maximum power output of 15 kW (20hp) – or 7.5 kW per motor, proving the optimum power to weight ratio for the vehicle in its urban driving environment. This ensures the best possible response at start-up (0 to 19 mph in 2.8 seconds) and excellent in-gear acceleration (19 – 37 mph in 4 seconds), ensuring driveability and safety are to the levels expected of a Peugeot.

The power for the vehicle is provided by two lithium-ion battery packs supplying energy to the respective electric motors located under the right and left-hand rear seats, with a comfortable range of 75 miles. This layout avoids any reduction in the interior space or the available storage space. Furthermore, this location between the front and rear wheels helps with the weight distribution of the vehicle and benefits vehicle stability, especially during braking.

Peugeot engineers have completely reinvented the way to design a vehicle. The BB1 uses a tubular chassis designed by Peugeot Motorcycles. It still, however, includes all normal “car” dynamic systems: electric power steering, suspension (double-wishbone front and rear suspension), friction damper spring assemblies – granting the vehicle a level of road-holding to match the vehicle’s performance, its urban nature and driveability and safety levels worthy of the Peugeot Marque.

The body is made up of a very light carbon fibre structure, designed to wrap around the passenger compartment, all of which enables potential future customisation and a possibility of a variety of vehicle shapes.

Finally, the vehicle weight does not exceed 600 kg, including the batteries, enabling all its mechanical parts to be placed in their ideal position, ensuring optimal weight distribution.

Thanks to its electric propulsion, the BB1 is an environmentally-friendly vehicle par excellence and emits no loud noise outside the vehicle and, above all, no pollutant emissions owing to the fact that it consumes no fossil fuels.

But this eco-responsibility isn’t limited to just driving. At a standstill, the passenger compartment ventilation keeps operating in daylight thanks to the solar panels placed on the roof of the vehicle. This enables two functions: pre-ventilation of the interior and the trapping of pollutants and ultra-fine dust particles (?m), due to the use of high-performance filters and activated carbon.

The BB1’s solar panels use cutting-edge technology, designed in partnership with the Ocean Vital foundation. Flexible (enabling their usage on surfaces as complex as the dual-bubble roof of the BB1), they provide a high yield of around 16% of energy captured (a much higher performance than current systems) to power some of the vehicle’s systems.

The Ocean Vital Foundation, created by round-the-world navigator Raphaël Dinelli, develops new clean technologies with the aim of preserving our natural resources and environment. As part of the BB1 project, Peugeot and Ocean Vital have entered into an agreement to support research and development into new renewable energy technology and, therefore, encourage the development of research projects and the “green economy” in France.

The name “BB1″ isn’t only a reference to Peugeot’s history and the “Baby Peugeot” models of 1905 and 1912.

This ultra-compact, lightweight electric vehicle concept is also something of a throwback to the Peugeot VLV. Three hundred and seventy seven of these were built between 1941 and 1945, meeting the then special needs of users throughout the Second World War. All this stands as proof that Peugeot has always been able to create and adapt its mobility options to a particular time and need.
